Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Trust ST3 Clinical Fellow to join our Trauma and Orthopaedics team at Musgrove Park Hospital. This full-time post offers a unique opportunity for doctors who have completed core surgical training and are preparing to apply for specialty training in Trauma and Orthopaedics.
The successful candidate will work closely with Consultants to deliver high-quality care to both emergency and elective orthopaedic patients. Daily responsibilities include attending fracture and elective clinics, assisting in main and day theatre operating sessions, and supporting junior doctors. The role also involves participation in a 1:8 non-resident on-call rota covering nights and weekends.
Although this is a non-training post, the department provides excellent clinical exposure and educational opportunities, including monthly clinical governance meetings, audit support, and bedside teaching for junior colleagues and medical students. Subject to performance, candidates may be eligible for a Certificate of Readiness to Enter Specialty Training (CREST).

Main duties, tasks & skills required

As a Trust ST3 Clinical Fellow in Trauma and Orthopaedics at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, you will play a vital role in delivering high-quality care to patients requiring emergency and elective orthopaedic treatment. Working closely with your assigned Consultant, your daily responsibilities will include attending fracture and elective clinics, assisting in operating sessions in both main and day theatres, and ensuring timely and accurate completion of clinical documentation.
You will be expected to provide support and guidance to postgraduate doctors, participate in bedside teaching for junior colleagues and medical students, and respond promptly to calls from the Emergency Department. The role also includes participation in a 1:8 non-resident on-call rota covering nights and weekends.
In addition to clinical duties, you will contribute to departmental audits, morbidity and mortality reviews, and monthly clinical governance meetings. You'll be encouraged to engage in research activities and maintain your professional development through study leave and relevant courses. While this is a non-training post, the department offers excellent opportunities for skill enhancement and preparation for specialty training applications.

Essential
To be considered for the Trust ST3 Clinical Fellow post in Trauma and Orthopaedics at Somerset NHS Foundation Trust, applicants must meet the following essential criteria:
Medical Degree: Possession of an MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
Postgraduate Membership: Full Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons (MRCS) at the time of application.
GMC Registration: Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and a current licence to practise.
Training Completion: Successful completion of Foundation Year 1 and 2 (F1 & F2), as well as Core Training years CT1 and CT2 (or equivalent ST1/ST2) within the UK or a comparable healthcare system.
Clinical Experience: Demonstrated experience working in the UK or an equivalent healthcare system, beyond clinical attachments.
Career Commitment: Clear evidence of commitment to pursuing a career in Trauma and Orthopaedics.
Communication Skills: Proficiency in English, both written and spoken, with a good standard of literacy.
Professional Development: Willingness to engage in continuing professional development and undertake relevant courses.
