The children's Wellbeing Therapist will be providing early mental health intervention through community-based activities, liaison, consultation and therapeutic group work

This role is a unique and exciting opportunity to join an innovative team growing our children's services across the West Midlands.

Your work will be across two core areas of the Charity: Community Engagement and Counselling:

1. You will liaise with schools to identify children to take part in after-school 'Animal Assisted' classes at a local riding school. Children will be invited to connect with horses through grooming, patting, caring, bonding, and a short, assisted ride*. After this intervention, you will work with the children to discover new ways to express their emotions through therapeutic artwork.

2. You will deliver counselling interventions and awareness workshops in schools to support children experiencing difficult emotions.

3. Have a small case load, supporting the Children's Counselling Team

4. Deliver training sessions to colleagues, clients and partners as and when requested

5. Covering leave on the adult Single Point of Access Referral service (SPAR)

We are looking for someone who is creative, passionate and can bring new ideas to a growing charity.

*Please note, you will not be responsible for delivering horse-based activities

Key Tasks:



Working with children



Employ a range of theories and techniques to ensure the specific needs of children are met

Ensure any concerns about safeguarding are reported to the safeguarding Lead and the organisational and local safeguarding procedures are followed

Support children to gain, maintain and develop their emotional health and wellbeing through creative activities

To deliver direct interventions for children, young people or parent/carer(s), this may be in conjunction with others or as part of a directly held caseload - interventions should address presenting issues and outcomes as identified by the lead professional and the child or parent/carer. Interventions should prevent escalation of need and reduce referrals to specialist services

Partnership



Create excellent relationships with local schools to champion the project

To establish a robust evaluation process to ensure continuous best practice

Work in partnership with the riding school to support children experiencing mild to moderate mental health difficulties

To ensure that the project is of the highest quality by completing assessments, interventions, case management and workshops

Act as a key link with other agencies and where appropriate work with children/young people and families/carers

Participate in multi-agency meetings where necessary

Provide direction to appropriate services, preventing delays and avoiding inappropriate referrals

Contribute to the development of local networks

Collate and provide robust data and intelligence to influence strategy and service planning

Clinical



Children/young people, families and carers have their mental health needs assessed promptly

Use evidence-based behaviour change practice

Have a holistic approach to risky behaviours and situations

Keep good records of service operation ensuring confidentiality processes are adhered to

To assertively outreach to prevent non-attendance at appointments using appropriate, non-stigmatising and familiar environments

Use innovative, proactive methods to help service users

Act as an effective screening process for targeted and specialist services

Training & Learning



In partnership with other agencies develop and deliver learning and development opportunities to enable professionals working with children and young people and families to gain knowledge and skills regarding the identification and awareness of poor emotional wellbeing and mental health issues

Attend meetings and events as required by the nature of the role and as agreed by the organisation.

Undertake an active role in personal development through training and development as required and agreed by the line manager and which is foreseen as commensurate to carrying out the role and duties

Undertake any other duties and responsibilities as may reasonably be required within the scope of the post.

Essential:



Minimum Level 4 counselling/ Psychotherapy degree /Art MA/Dramatherapy MA

BACP/HCPC (Or other therapy/counselling accredited body)

Worked with children in a therapeutic environment

Experience with evidence based psychological therapies

Knowledge and experience in behavioural change techniques and building resilience and self-efficacy

Knowledge and understanding of NICE guidelines, safeguarding policies, risk management and identifying areas of risk

Must hold a full UK driving licence and be insured for business purposes
