Deputy Maintenance Manager
to join our team.
Role Overview
The Deputy Maintenance Manager will support the Maintenance Manager in overseeing the maintenance and repair of all heavy plant and mobile equipment on site. The role combines expert hands-on mechanical work with supervisory and planning responsibilities, ensuring all equipment operates safely, efficiently, and with minimal downtime. The position also plays a key role in developing local maintenance capability and supporting continuous improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
1. Maintenance & Repairs
Carrying out diagnostics, maintenance, and repairs on a wide range of heavy plant and mining equipment including excavators, dozers, graders, loaders, and haul trucks
Troubleshooting mechanical, hydraulic and electrical systems to minimize equipment downtime
Conducting routine servicing, preventative maintenance, and component replacements in accordance with OEM (original equipment manufacturer) standards
Maintaining accurate maintenance records and equipment history logs
2. Maintenance Management
Assisting the Maintenance Manager with:
Developing, implementing and overseeing preventative and predictive maintenance schedules for all heavy equipment
Planning and coordinating major overhauls, rebuilds, and component changeouts
Managing spare parts inventory and liaising with suppliers/Head office to ensure timely procurement of critical components
Monitoring equipment performance and implementing continuous improvement initiatives to enhance reliability and reduce costs
Ensuring compliance with company maintenance procedures, safety standards and environmental policies
3. Leadership and Staff Development
Acting as second-in-command to the Maintenance Manager and providing leadership in their absence
Supervising and mentoring a team of fitters
Providing technical guidance and hands-on training to local maintenance staff
Leading toolbox meetings and assigning tasks effectively
Promoting a culture of safety, teamwork and accountability within the maintenance team
4. Reporting & Communication
Assisting with the preparation of regular maintenance reports and equipment performance updates for management
Collaborating with operations and production teams to coordinate equipment availability
Reporting major breakdowns, incidents or equipment failures promptly with root cause analysis and corrective actions
Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
Trade qualification or equivalent in Heavy Plant Mechanics/Diesel Fitting/Mechanical Engineering
Hands-on experience of maintaining and repairing heavy mining/construction equipment
Experience working in a contracting environment with performance and availability targets
Strong knowledge of Caterpillar, Komatsu, Volvo or similar mining equipment
Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills
Proven experience in a supervisory or maintenance management capacity
Previous experience working in remote or developing regions, preferably in Africa
Solid understanding of preventative maintenance systems, CMMS and safety management
Desirable:
Working knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
Basic computer literacy (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, maintenance software)
Excellent communication and supervisory skills

Salary dependent on experience
