Support the classroom teacher with responsibility for the development and education of all pupils, including those with SEND and physical disabilities.
Assist in the development of pupils' learning and the management of behaviour under the direction of teaching staff/senior colleagues.
Provide specialist assistance to pupils with SEND who need particular help to overcome barriers to learning.
Jobholders generally work under the direct supervision of the teacher within the classroom but may occasionally work with pupils outside the classroom for short periods.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Support for Pupils
Provide support with mobility, including physically assisting pupils in activities. (may involve lifting where support with mobility is required, following expert guidance and training).
Assist pupils, where required, with dressing and undressing in connection with toileting, ensuring dignity and encouraging independence.
Assist with the development and implementation of Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs) and other support plans.
Establish good relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and responding appropriately to individual needs.
Encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in teacher-led activities.
Set challenging expectations and promote self-esteem, independence, and resilience.
Scaffold learning activities so that pupils work as independently as possible.
Provide feedback to pupils in relation to attainment and progress under teacher guidance.
Contribute to planning and implementing individual development plans for pupils, including attendance at reviews.
Accompany pupils on educational visits, trips and out-of-school activities, providing mobility support and supervision as required.
Support for the Teacher
Create and maintain a purposeful, orderly and supportive learning environment.
Use agreed strategies with the teacher to support pupils in achieving learning goals.
Assist with preparation and delivery of learning activities.
Report pupils' responses to learning and record progress as directed.
Provide detailed feedback to teachers on pupil achievement, progress and any concerns.
Promote positive pupil behaviour, dealing promptly with incidents in line with school policy.
Establish constructive relationships with parents/carers, referring concerns appropriately.
Support for the Curriculum
Assist in the implementation of structured and agreed learning activities and teaching programmes, adapting activities as required.
Support curriculum access for pupils with SEND, including use of ICT and specialist equipment.
Prepare, maintain and support the use of equipment and resources required to meet lesson objectives.
Support for the School
Be aware of and comply with safeguarding, health and safety, confidentiality, and data protection policies, reporting concerns appropriately.
Support equality of opportunity and inclusion.
Contribute to the overall ethos and aims of the school.
Work collaboratively with colleagues and external professionals.
Participate in meetings, training and performance development as required.
Accompany and support pupils on school trips, visits and events.
Respond appropriately to emergency situations, including use of evacuation procedures for pupils with mobility needs.
