Job Description

We are looking for a Nursing Assistant who loves a challenge, Ward F6 is an Emergency Surgery Ward and we accept patients from Accident & Emergency, SAEC and other wards around the trust.



We are a 33 bedded unit which consists of 5 x bays and 3 x SR's



The ward is fast paced and very busy, we have a mixture of patients on the ward and some of these can be very sick, they also may need to go to theatre. We work closely with multi- disciplinary teams some of these being pain team, colorectal nurses, Palliative care, Dieticians and Diabetes.



F6 work together as a team but you must also be able to work well on your own initiative.



Shift times are Long days or nights these are 07:00 - 19:30 or 19:00 - 07:30 and you will be expected as full time to work 3 weeks of 3x long days / nights and a 4th week will be 4x long days / nights. We are flexible with shifts days and nights.



You will be expected to work closely with the nurses on the ward, taking observations, assisting a patient with washing and dressing and all hygiene needs. Some patients may need assistance with eating and drinking, Manual handling when assisting some patients with mobility needs.



You will be expected to use computer equipment but all of this will be shown to you and assistance given, communication and documentation is very important on the ward.

Your main duties as a Nursing Assistant are the following:

Answering call bells



Assisting patient's with washing and dressing.



Helping with pad changes, hygiene needs and assisting some patients to the toilet or commodes, some patients on the ward may also need Stoma care.



Pressure area care ensuring regular turns of non-mobile patients and pressure relieving equipment.



Taking observations these being BP, Pulse, Temp, Saturations and Respiration rates. Informing the nurses if any of these are out of range.



Assisting patients with eating and drinking, or administering mouth care.



Documenting on the computer fluid balance, rounding's, and any care given to patients.



Once you have had training then taking BM's (Blood Sugars) ECG's (Tracing of the Heart)



End of life care and last offices (these we will work closely with yourselves)



Working within a team but also able to work well within your own limitations, communications is key between team members and also with patients.

Job responsibilities



To assist in the delivery of a high standard of patient care in all activities of daily living, as directed in the individual plan of care needs, observing and reporting specific changes to senior staff and documenting care given.



CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITY



Clinical Activities



Measure and observe the physical characteristics/condition of patients, considering age developmental stage and parental factors as follows:



Temperature Pulse Respiration Blood pressure Weight and height NEWs, CREWS, MEOWS Oxygen saturation Use of assessment tools to document pain

Assist patients to eat and drink as per identified care needs; identifying, recording and reporting abnormal dietary and fluid intake.



Provide support with repositioning, mobility, pressure area care using manual handling risk assessments and safe manual handling



Obtain specimens as requested and carry out relevant investigations, e.g. urinalysis and document the results, reporting them to registered practitioner as necessary.



Adhere to the basic principles of infection control demonstrating effective hand hygiene and awareness of potential cross infection.



Prepare and support patients and their families undergoing clinical activities and recovering from clinical interventions.



Accompany patients to other wards/departments as required.



Undertake basic cleaning and decontamination of communal equipment between patient use and/or storage.



Communication and Team Working



Communicate effectively and sensitively with patients, parents/carers, relatives and colleagues, using a range of age and appropriate styles, referring to senior staff as necessary.



Modify style of communication to suit different situations and people, listening, and demonstrating support, kindness, thoughtfulness and courtesy.



Answer the telephone and relay messages accurately, courteously and competently.



Welcome patients, families and visitors in a professional, friendly and helpful manner.



Work effectively as a member of the ward team, offering support to colleagues and requesting assistance as necessary.



Record care given accurately, legibly, completely and concisely.



Ensure the Trusts policies and procedures for safeguarding children are followed at all times including reporting and documenting concerns and reporting issues to senior staff.



Managing Resources Responsibility



Ensure adequate stock, safe storage, and stock rotation are maintained.



Ensure bed spaces are prepared in readiness to accept admissions.



Follow the daily ward routine and ensure relevant Nursing Assistant tasks are completed efficiently and effectively.



Undertake training and follow local policy in appropriate maintenance and cleaning of equipment ready for repair.

Enter data into computerised systems as required.



Undertake errands off the ward as required e.g. to pharmacy, pathology.



Report repairs/maintenance issues appropriately.



Identify stock/linen shortages and take appropriate action.



Respond to secure doors, ensuring security policy is maintained at all times.



Personal Development



Be aware of and adhere to the West Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust policies and procedures, ie: security, health and safety, reporting of untoward incidents, lifting and handling, confidentiality, disciplinary and grievance procedures, fire policy (attending regular training as required).



Demonstrate insight into own personal development needs and access development through an agreed Personal Development Plan.



Attend mandatory training, and complete other in-service training (including e-learning) as necessary.



Maintain and develop standards of practice through continuous personal development (CPD) in line with healthcare changes, developments and service delivery requirements.



Complete the initial training period required to demonstrate knowledge, skills and attitudes in line with Care Certificate Standards.



Complete organisational competence assessment requirements for the job role and clinical tasks.



Recognise and understand the nature and limits of the Nursing Assistant's role



Nursing Assistants who have completed their initial training, organisational competence assessments and have six months full-time equivalent experience in the Band 2 Nursing Assistant role may undertake further training and competence assessment for additional clinical tasks appropriate to their specific work area.

Desirable



Experience of working in a healthcare team environment
