We are seeking an inspiring and visionary educator to take on the role of Second in Charge within our thriving Creative Arts Department. This is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic individual who is passionate about Art, Design and Technology, and eager to lead, innovate, and nurture creativity across the school.
As an enthusiastic and skilled practitioner, you will bring both artistic flair and technological expertise to your teaching, motivating pupils of all abilities to develop their talents and achieve excellence. You will be a creative thinker with the ability to design and deliver engaging lessons, ensuring high levels of challenge, inclusivity, and progression across all key stages. A commitment to extending learning beyond the classroom--through extracurricular activities, clubs, and projects--will be central to your role.
This position carries the responsibility of supporting the strategic development of the Art & DT curriculum, while also contributing to the wider vision of the department. Working closely with the Head of Department, you will take an active role in shaping learning opportunities, driving innovation, and ensuring the highest standards of teaching and learning.
Key Responsibilities
The Second in Charge in Art and DT will:
Leadership & Management
Lead by example, modelling the highest professional standards in all aspects of school life.
Support the Head of Department in shaping the vision and strategic direction of Art & Design Technology.
Support the Head of Department in monitoring the quality of teaching and learning across the department through learning walks and giving timely and supportive feedback to staff
Lead, motivate and support colleagues within the department, fostering a culture of creativity, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Run regular department meetings and contribute to cross-trust collaboration with colleagues in other academies
Curriculum & Teaching

oth within lessons and extracurricular activities, to ensure Further develop and implement an ambitious and innovative Art and Design Technology curriculum, ensuring it reflects national changes and revised qualifications.
Lead the development of schemes of work and resources that deliver high-quality, engaging lessons across all key stages.
Promote and champion the study of Art and Design Technology across the 11-18 phase.
Deliver consistently outstanding teaching and learning in both Art and DT, providing challenge and support for pupils of all abilities.
Plan, prepare and deliver engaging lessons, ensuring that assessment, marking and feedback are effective and in line with academy policy.
Set and assess internal examinations and tests where required.
Devise and implement interventions, trong progress for all learners.
Quality Assurance & Improvement
Undertake lesson observations, learning walks, work scrutiny and data analysis to monitor teaching standards and pupil progress across Art and DT.
Use evidence, benchmarks and self-evaluation to drive improvement in classroom practice and pupil outcomes.
Ensure consistent implementation of school and trust policies within the Creative Arts Department.
Staff Development & Mentoring
Support staff in developing innovative approaches to teaching Art and DT, encouraging the sharing of best practice.
Stay informed of current developments in creative education and integrate new strategies into departmental practice.
Pupil Engagement & Achievement
Create and maintain an organised, inspiring learning environment within classrooms, studios, workshops, and shared spaces.
Ensure pupils are supported to achieve their full potential through high expectations, effective teaching, and positive behaviour management.
Provide accurate information for parents, attend parents' evenings, and contribute to wider school events.
Develop and embed effective behaviour management strategies within the department, in line with whole-school policies, while also enhancing the rewards system and overseeing the fair and consistent issue of pupil certifications.
Quality Assurance & Improvement

Keep up to date with developments in your subject area and in teaching practice and methodology.
Take responsibility for your own professional development in discussion with your line manager.
Maintain an organized and effective learning environment in the classroom and shared areas.
Ensure the consistent implementation of school and Trust policies and procedures throughout the subject areas.
Work collaboratively with the other academies and colleagues within the Trust.
To contribute to departmental self-evaluation
To monitor the quality of teaching; based on evidence, self-evaluation and development, ensuring a consistent and continuous focus on achievement and aspiration.
To help disseminate ideas and approaches for classroom and curriculum management to help raise standards.
