About the Role



We are seeking an organised, diligent and detail-focused

Accounts Assistant

to support the Finance Team in delivering accurate financial accounting, reporting and internal controls. This role works closely with the Accountant and Finance Business Partner to ensure the integrity and timeliness of financial transactions across the organisation's systems, including the General Ledger.

The successful candidate will support budget preparation, revenue and expenditure monitoring, procure-to-pay processes, banking management and VAT returns. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with early-stage finance experience who is motivated to develop professionally in a structured and supportive environment.

Key ResponsibilitiesFinancial Accounting & Reporting



Assist in the preparation of revenue budget estimates and support monthly and quarterly closedown processes. Ensure compliance with relevant accounting codes of practice and internal financial procedures. Maintain the accuracy and timeliness of financial entries processed via CIVICA, ensuring records are audit-ready.

Income, Expenditure & Ledger Management



Oversee periodic income billing, track incoming payments and support the dunning process to maximise cashflow. Lead on procure-to-pay activities, including reviewing purchase requisitions, generating purchase orders, goods receipting and invoice processing. Maintain the accuracy of the purchase ledger and provide information for management accounts.

Banking & VAT



Lead on banking administration, including bank reconciliations and related cashflow forecasting. Assist with reconciling VAT control accounts and prepare monthly VAT returns in line with agreed schedules.

Process Improvement & Systems



Contribute to improving financial processes, documentation and use of financial systems. Support the finance team in maintaining robust internal controls and completing all financial tasks within set reporting timetables.

Team Contribution



Work collaboratively as part of the Finance Team, providing support to colleagues, internal stakeholders and external partners as required. Uphold organisational policies, including equality, health and safety and professional conduct.

Ideal Candidate ProfileEssential Skills & Experience



AAT Level 2, NVQ Level 2 in Accounting or equivalent qualification, with evidence of ongoing professional development. Basic understanding of core accounting functions and how they interact. Experience working in a team or project-based environment. Competent IT skills, including Word and Excel. Ability to produce accurate, high-quality work with strong attention to detail. Ability to research tasks thoroughly and maintain effective working papers.

Desirable



Knowledge of local government or public-sector finance. Experience using financial management systems. Ability to communicate in Welsh or a willingness to learn.
