Job Description


Our Council takes a sensible and proportionate approach to managing risk and your skills and enthusiasm will help enable, empower and support the organisation to do just that. The aim of this position is to effectively support the daily tasks of both the Health and Safety team and Emergency Planning team to ensure The Council, Schools and our communities are supported. The role requires a high level of communication, the ability to work to set timescales, diligence and attention to detail. The successful candidate will be able to build a good rapport with customers and field staff alike, ensuring both relationships work well.

A confident telephone manner is essential together with a good level of IT skills, specifically with Microsoft Word and Excel as well as the ability to learn and absorb our bespoke software. You will have good attention to detail, organisational skills with the ability to work on your own initiative and to strict time scales. You will be used to working efficiently and most importantly be a team player.

Key duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Support the Health and Safety team in meeting the Council\'s statutory duties and to fulfil the Council\'s aim of protecting the health and safety of employees and other persons who come into contact with the services provided by the authority; and
  • Support the Emergency Planning team in ensuring the Council is meeting its duties as a Category 1 emergency responder, as outlined in the Civil Contingencies Act 2004
  • Support the corporate assurance process by maintaining effective administration of health and safety management system and its compliance monitoring programme.
  • Assist with the delivery of staff training, offering advice and guidance as required.
  • Act as a point of contact for initial health and safety enquiries for new members of staff.
  • Support the teams work with external agencies and partners such as the Health and Safety Executive and the Thames Valley Local Resilience Forum
Skills, Experience and Qualifications:
  • Awareness or knowledge of health and safety legislation and/or emergency planning good practices.
  • Approachable with good communication skills and the ability to present information in a clear and meaningful way
  • Ability to juggle priorities and work flexibly within a dynamic environment
  • Proficient in IT including Microsoft Word and Excel
