Job Description

Advanced Nurse Practitioner ISMS The Advanced Nurse Practitioner is a highly skilled healthcare professional who provides clinical consultations and medication prescriptions. The Advanced Nurse Practitioner must demonstrate advanced clinical knowledge, a thorough understanding of prescribing laws, and the ability to work independently in assessing, diagnosing, and managing patient conditions. This role requires effective communication skills to ensure safe and effective care while maintaining the highest standards of patient confidentiality.

Clinical responsibilities



Maintain accurate and detailed electronic health records of patient consultations, assessments, diagnoses, and prescribed treatments. Ensure that all records comply with data protection regulations, such as the Data Protection Act 2018 and GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation). Document all interactions and prescribe medications in a clear, timely, and legally compliant manner. Confidently and competently make ethical, evidence-based decisions and interventions when faced with complexity and assess and manage the risk associated with these decisions. Review pathology results, where appropriate and agree on a clear plan of care. Review and action communications including letters, where appropriate. Prescribe medications based on patient assessments in accordance with current clinical guidelines and regulatory requirements. Ensure prescriptions are safe, appropriate, and clinically justified for the patient's condition. Adhere to relevant legislation, including the Medicines Act 1968, the Controlled Drugs Regulations, and the NMC (Nursing and Midwifery Council) Prescribing acutely for clinical conditions appropriately and where relevant in accordance with NICE guidelines and local pathways and protocols Confidently and competently make ethical, evidence-based decisions and interventions when faced with complexity and assess and manage the risk associated with these Technology Proficiency: Proficiency in using telemedicine platforms, Electronic Health Records (EHR), SystmOne and other relevant healthcare technologies. Access to a laptop that is smartcard enabled To undertake the duties of non-medical prescribing within the substance misuse service ensuring compliance with safer prescribing policies and national policies. To maintain appropriate skills and competency in accordance with guidance set out by professional regulatory bodies. To promote and maintain harm reduction strategies in the treatment and prevention of associated blood borne viruses To provide advice, guidance, and leadership in respect of health and concurrent substance misuse needs o Demonstrate critical thinking and skills in clinical decision making in the management of patients. Administer treatment within local guidelines / protocols. To maintain competencies associated with the role ensuring working within own limitations / scope of practice. Referral / sign posting to appropriate health professionals / services.

Leadership Responsibilities



Understand own role and scope and identify how role may develop over time. Monitor and evaluate clinical practice through audit and formal evaluation process leading on development and changes to improve clinical care and staff satisfaction. Take responsibility for own learning and performance, including participating in clinical supervision.

Prioritise own workload and ensure effective time-management strategies are embedded. Work to improve service provision over the long term and commitment to quality.

Confidentiality



Maintain high levels of confidentiality at all times, ensuring that information is not communicated except in the course of recognised duty and in accordance with DrPA's policy.

Requirements



Education and Training



o Essential



Accredited advanced nurse practice programme OR substantial autonomous practice experience supported by the appropriate post registration qualification at degree or MSc level. (which maps across to ANP competencies) Independent prescriber Evidence of continued professional development at masters level, including delivery of evidence-based care.

o Desirable



RCGP Certificate in the Management of Drug Misuse (Parts 1 or 2). Accredited Nursing leadership course.

Knowledge and Experience



Essential


Substantial autonomous practice working and multiprofessional team working.Demonstrable experience of working to the ANP competencies (RCN/National) Demonstrable experience coupled with a broad and sound knowledge of complex and common conditions in adults Significant experience of working in a complex environment which allows for the full use of ANP skills e.g. nurse led clinics or emergency care centres, out of hours facilities, walk in centres or general practice. Experience of independent prescriber including identifying and leading change to clinical/ prescribing practice to improve service delivery.

o Desirable



Experience of working within a secure environment. Experience of working with vulnerable groups.

Skills



o Essential



Effective communication skills within practice - both written and verbal. Keyboard skills - computer literate with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office Able to take a concise history and demonstrate differential diagnosis skills at an advanced level, employing critical thinking. Able to maintain contemporaneous clinical records following clinical activities.
