Self Directed Support Advocate



Purpose of the Role



The Self-Directed Support Advocate will provide independent, person-centred advocacy to individuals who are eligible for Self-Directed Support (SDS). The role ensures people understand their rights, options, and responsibilities under SDS legislation, enabling them to make informed choices about their care and support.

Key Responsibilities



Support individuals to understand the four SDS options and how these apply to their circumstances.

Provide independent advocacy to ensure the person's views, wishes, and rights are represented throughout the SDS process.

Assist individuals to prepare for assessments, reviews, and meetings with social work or health professionals.

Help people to identify and articulate their outcomes and priorities for care and support planning.

Offer guidance on managing SDS budgets, including signposting to relevant financial advice services.

Maintain accurate records and produce reports as required.

Work collaboratively with local authority staff, health professionals, and other agencies while maintaining independence and confidentiality.

Promote awareness of SDS and advocacy services within the community through presentations and events.

Adhere to safeguarding procedures and organisational policies at all times.

This role will involve travel across rural Moray and so a valid driving licence or access to a vehicle and driver is essential.

Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to meet business need.

Essential Criteria



Awareness of human rights-based approaches and person-centred planning.

Knowledge of local health and social care systems, including SDS options and processes.

Strong communication skills.

Ability to confidently use MS 365 package.

Skills and Abilities



Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to explain complex information clearly.

Ability to listen actively and work collaboratively with individuals to identify their needs and preferences.

Strong advocacy skills: able to represent and promote the individual's views without imposing personal opinions.

Organisational skills to prioritise tasks, and meet deadlines.

Ability to maintain accurate records and produce clear reports.

Experience



Experience of working in advocacy, social care, or a related field.

Experience supporting individuals to make informed decisions and exercise their rights.

Experience of working with people from diverse backgrounds.

Desirable Criteria



Knowledge and Understanding Understanding of Self-Directed Support principles and the Social Care (Self-directed Support) (Scotland) Act 2013.

Knowledge of welfare benefits and financial management in relation to SDS budgets.

Experience of working within multi-agency settings.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: 9,828.00 per year

Expected hours: 15 per week

Work Location: In person
