Job Description


ADAS, a part of the RSK Group, is seeking an Agricultural Soil and Land Drainage Surveyor on a full-time, permanent basis. We are ideally looking for applicants based across Cambridge, Coventry, Hereford, Leeds and Yorkshire. Either on a hybrid home and office basis or a fully remote basis.

Candidates from all educational backgrounds will be considered, from school and further education to those with higher-level qualifications. The key criteria is that you have a genuine curiosity and willingness to learn, and an interest in working in the agricultural, engineering and/or environmental sectors. The roles range from hands-on in-field surveys to computer-aided design, mapping (GIS) and technical report writing. There is scope for individuals to focus on the more practical and/or academic roles as befits their skills and ambitions.

Successful candidates will be involved in various projects across all our business sectors including cross-country pipelines and cables, infrastructure, and residential and commercial developments. Projects are located throughout the UK, sometimes in remote and challenging locations. We, therefore, require dedicated and enthusiastic staff surveyors who enjoy outdoor work with an aptitude for hard physical work, excellent communication skills and a willingness to develop their skills and abilities within this team.

Full training will be given according to experience. Training may be from external bodies and/or from our own dedicated and experienced staff, as ADAS developed many of the key standards adopted in the industry.

Key responsibilities may include:

  • Field surveys of soil characteristics and land drainage
  • Managing data
  • Computer-aided design and GIS to produce maps and technical designs
  • Writing technical reports, such as for Agricultural Land Classification (ALC), Soil Management Plans, soil health and land drainage designs
  • Design land drainage works
  • Liaising with clients, landowners, contractors, statutory authorities and third parties
  • The role may involve delivering other broader work within the company as part of professional development or to help deliver specific projects more efficiently.
Person Specification
  • Full UK driving licence and access to own vehicle
  • Be accustomed to working outside in all weather
  • Willing and able to work as part of a team
  • Good attention to detail and ability to adapt and problem solve
  • Must be able to travel throughout the UK and stay away from home for short periods and be comfortable with lone working in an agricultural setting where livestock may be present.
  • More experienced or academic candidates may also have:
  • BTEC or similar qualification in agricultural or engineering disciplines
  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in Soil Science, or a related degree (physical geology, environmental science) with relevant practical experience
  • Experience of soil surveying and knowledge of Agricultural Land Classification (ALC)
  • Excellent report writing skills
