About the Role

We're seeking an exceptional AI Lead to own the strategic direction and hands-on development of our AI capabilities. You'll be the person who keeps us at the forefront of a rapidly evolving landscape, by staying across new research, models, capabilities, and tooling, while translating that knowledge into market-leading product features.


Today, we have strong software engineers, but we're missing deep, dedicated AI expertise. We need someone who lives and breathes applied AI: thinking about higher-order primitives, context engines, embeddings, context management, and model selection for different use cases. You won't just conceptualise solutions, you'll build them.


This is not a research role. We're looking for a builder who happens to be deeply knowledgeable about AI, not a researcher who occasionally writes code. You'll be the start of a new function within the business, working closely with our engineering team to integrate AI thinking into everything we do.

Responsibilities

Own our AI strategy:

Define and evolve how we use AI across our product, from model selection to context management to prompt engineering patterns.

Stay at the frontier:

Keep up with the latest AI developments: papers, models, tooling, and techniques, and translate relevant advances into practical product improvements.

Build, not just advise:

Design and implement AI-powered features, from prototypes to production systems. You'll be hands-on with code, not just strategy decks.

Elevate the team:

Share knowledge with our engineering team, helping everyone develop better intuitions about how to leverage AI effectively.

Shape our architecture:

Advise on and implement the right abstractions for AI within our codebase - context engines, retrieval systems, agent frameworks, and more.

We're looking for someone who combines genuine enthusiasm for AI with the pragmatism to ship real products. You're not interested in research for its own sake, you want to see AI solving real problems for real people.

Applied AI experience:

You've built AI-powered products or features that are in production and used by real users, and you understand the gap between a promising paper and a working system - as opposed to pure research and academic papers strictly within the theoretical realm.

Strong technical foundations:

You can write good code. You're comfortable implementing solutions yourself, not just directing others. Experience with Python is expected; familiarity with systems languages like Rust is a plus - you will be seeking variety and will be comfortable with ambiguity.

Deep AI knowledge:

You understand modern AI architectures, particularly large language models and their applications. You're familiar with concepts like embeddings, retrieval-augmented generation, context management, fine-tuning, and prompt engineering.

Curiosity and learning mindset:

You actively follow AI developments: reading papers, experimenting with new models, understanding what's hype versus what's real.

Communication skills:

You can explain complex AI concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences, and collaborate effectively across teams.

Bonus:

Experience at leading AI labs or AI-first companies (OpenAI, Anthropic, DeepMind, Meta AI, Mistral are some examples). Background in code generation, developer tools, or enterprise AI applications. Experience building context-aware AI systems or agent frameworks.
