Job Description

Tesla Engineering Limited manufactures resistive and superconducting electromagnets for particle accelerators of all types and produces specialist gradient coils for magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners. Tesla also supplies electromagnets for emerging applications such as fusion research and the semiconductor industry.

Tasks & Training Details



You will learn and become proficient in the design and manufacture of Tesla products. These products include MRI gradient coils, electro-magnets and superconducting magnets. You will be given the opportunity to work in the following five areas, on a 4-month rotational basis, not necessarily in the order shown below, during the first 20 months of the apprenticeship after which you will have the opportunity to specialise:

Design Rotation (1 of 5 - 4 months)



Gradients & Superconducting Magnets



Working as part of the design team you will take responsibility, with support, for the design of a product and achieve the customers' requirements. You will therefore gain a thorough knowledge of acceptable drawing standards, use of CAD, design calculations, manufacturing documentation, liaison with other departments and working to deadlines. On completion of training you should be competent in the following:

Be proficient in the construction of 3D models and assemblies on the CAD system. Be able to construct clear 2D drawings and manufacturing documentation to convey design requirements. Be able to design electrical diagrams and be able to contribute to assembly fault finding. Be able to support the management team with customer meetings and deal with technical requests.

Engineering Projects Rotation (2 & 3 of 5 - 8 months total)



Resistive Magnets & Superconducting Magnets



In this leg of the rotation you will learn and become proficient in the manufacture and testing of Tesla products. On completion of training you should be competent in the following:

Be able to read and understand engineering drawings. Proficient in the use of mechanical and electrical measuring and test equipment and be able to perform measurements and tests unsupervised. Be able to understand and follow instruction set out in test documents. Understand quality management systems. Be able to use basic machine tools.

Engineering Production Rotation (4 of 5 - 4 months)



Gradients



Here you will learn and become proficient in the assembly and construction of Tesla products. You will be given the opportunity to work on products as a member of an assembly team and ultimately on their own. On completion of training you should be competent in the following:-

Be proficient in the assembly of Tesla products, manufacturing processes including Soldering, Brazing, Fitting, Coil Winding and Vacuum Impregnation. Be able to read and understand engineering drawings. Be able to contribute to assembly fault finding, design and manufacturing reviews. Be able to write manufacturing documentation using MS Word / Excel. Be able to use basic machine tools.

Quality Rotation (5 of 5 - 4 months)



Working within the Quality Team you will learn and become proficient in the quality assurance of Tesla products. On completion of training you should be competent in the following:

Be able to read and understand engineering drawings. Proficient in the use of mechanical and electrical measuring and test equipment and be able to perform measurements and tests unsupervised. Be able to understand quality management systems. Have a basic understanding of auditing and be able to assist a trained auditor in performing Quality & Environmental audits. Understand material certification and be able to relate to design and customer requirements. Be able to perform in house calibration of mechanical measuring equipment and manage calibration of outsourced calibration, maintaining records and calibration status. Be proficient in the collection and handling of performance data relating to the Quality department.

Benefits



25 days holiday per year plus bank holidays - holiday can be used in hours rather than days/half days. 500 six-monthly payment (1,000 per annum until the end of the apprenticeship) to assist with travel, books etc. Referral scheme: if an employee / apprentice introduces someone to Tesla and they employ them and they make it through probation the referrer gets 1,000 as many times as they do it.
Apprenticeship duration 48 months

Weekly working hours - Mon-Fri 8.30am-5.00pm

Total working hours 37.5

Essential Qualifications:



GCSE Grade 5/B and above in maths and science. GCSE Grade 4/C and above in English and IT. One other GCSE in any subject at Grade 4 and above.

Training to be provided:



On completion of the apprenticeship, you will have achieved the following qualifications;

Engineering and Manufacturing Support Technician Apprenticeship Standard ST1395 Level 3

610/4353/9 EAL Level 3 Diploma in Engineering and Manufacturing Support Technologies

(This qualification is delivered by SIGTA simultaneously with the AME course over a 2-year period)

L3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering - Technical Support Technician. Ref 603/2290/1.

The final apprenticeship completion certificate will be issued on achievement of the above qualification and successful completion of end point assessment.

Desired skills and personal qualities



You must have good verbal and written communication skills. An enthusiastic attitude to work is a must and an aptitude for mechanical and electrical assembly is desirable.
