Description



The Apprentice Fire Alarm & Smoke Control Engineer will work under the supervision of experienced engineers to assist with the installation, testing, commissioning, maintenance, and repair of fire detection/alarm systems and smoke control systems within residential and commercial buildings across the South East.



This apprenitceship offers hands-on experience within the fire and security industry, supported by hands-on training from experienced engineers.



The successful candidate will gain practical skills working with a variety of systems, including:

Smoke control systems Emergency lighting systems Fire alarm system installation, maintainence and servicing Fire alarm verification and fire alarm end of life management

By the end of your apprenticeship, you'll be a fully qualified multi disciplined engineer with the confidence and experience to work independently in a trusted, professional fire and security company.



Entry requirements



Desired skills/experience:



A full, clean UK driving license is essential for this role - please only apply if you have a full UK driving license Live in, or able to commute regularly to, Chatham in Kent Able to pass an enhanced DBS background check Minimum Grade 4 (C) in Maths and English (or equivalent) Some practical or technical experience (for example, basic electrical knowledge or interest in engineering) is an advantage but not essential Enthusiastic and eager to learn new skills. A good communicator with strong interpersonal skills Able to follow instructions and work as part of a team Reliable, with excellent attention to detail Capable of using logical thinking to solve problems Committed to completing their apprenticeship and developing a long-term career in the fire and security industry

Training to be provided



Skills for Security will deliver the apprenticeship training in block release at their Watford training centre. You will attend centre one week every 4 weeks as part of "the Evolve Academy".



Fire Emergency Security Systems Technician Level 3 Apprenticeship Standard.



You will be required to complete all training tasks allocated during your block release weeks at the training centre and gather any site evidence needed to supplement your studies.



You will be required to complete an annual assessment at the training centre and take part in any additional training courses that the company require you to complete.



The employer will mentor and coach you on the job. You will also shadow, learn and get involved in all aspects of Security alarms.



On the job training:



Working within a structured 3-year apprenticeship program, you will attend college on block release where you will be taught the required regulatory knowledge, design principles and technical skills to work comfortably on some of the most complex and advanced systems within the industry.



To compliment your college learning you will be exposed to and trained in a variety of different roles from containment and cabling installation, 2nd fix installation and commissioning, fault finding and rectification, routine servicing, and planned maintenance.



The role includes a structured training programme combining on-the-job practical training, FIA Emergency Lighting and FIA EVC Systems courses, manufacturer-approved training, and hands-on learning at the companies in-house training centre in Chatham. The apprentice will also develop practical skills across fire, smoke control, and emergency lighting systems.



Things to consider



The apprenticeship is at least 18 months, so full commitment to your studies is required throughout the years of the apprenticeship.

Future prospects



On successful completion of the apprenticeship, there will be opportunities to progress into a qualified Fire Alarm Engineer and/or Smoke Control Engineer role. With further experience and training, progression may include becoming a multi-disciplined life safety engineer, lead engineer, or moving into supervisory, commissioning, or specialist technical roles within fire and smoke control.
