What does the job role involve?
To provide support to the Safety, Security and Sustainability team and to the wider Greater Anglia business, with a focus on reducing workplace accidents, improving operational safety performance, and advising on the statutory health, safety and environmental requirements as they affect Greater Anglia's operations. They will assist the management team in ensuring that legal obligations and company management system requirements are implemented.
The Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) Technician will assist in developing, reviewing, and checking the implementation of safe systems of work, deliver training (e.g., toolbox talks), investigate incidents, analyse data, and present findings to the wider team. The SHE Technician will engage with all aspects of the organisation to support the embedment of a culture that ensures everyone is able to return to their family and friends unharmed every day, whilst also protecting and enhancing the global land, air and water resources for future generations. This will be achieved by inspiring and influencing others to recognise the benefits of working responsibly, understanding the legal framework, and demonstrating how safety, health, and environmental management can enhance operational activities.
Reporting to the Head of Risk & Assurance, this role is working on a fixed-term contract basis, which will cover the period of the apprenticeship.
The successful candidate will be working towards a Safety, Health and Environment Technician apprenticeship level 3.
The role will spend 20% of the working hours gaining skills and knowledge to work towards the safety, health and environment technician apprenticeship level 3 standard. This will typically include attending workshops, online learning, webinars, coaching or shadowing. The remaining 80% of the working hours will be spent delivering the following Key Accountabilities.
Key Accountabilities
Assist the management team in the development, management, implementation and monitoring of the Safety, Health and Environmental Management System by updating systems in line with changes in legislation or best practice, delivering training, coaching operational teams and undertaking workplace inspections.
Provide advice on the practical implementation of the company's management system policies and processes.
Undertake and/or assist with the production of risk assessments to ensure hazards are suitably identified, controlled and documented.
Undertake and/or assist with the monitoring, analysis of and reporting of SHE performance
Assist the management team in establishing, managing and maintaining relationships with external stakeholders such as local authorities, the Office of Rail and Road, RAIB and RSSB
Research Safety, Health and Environmental Issues and best practices. Review updates of health and safety regulations.
Assist and/or manage the investigation of accidents, incidents, dangerous occurrences, near misses and other incidents as directed.
Support in verifying data accuracy and completeness, making sure that all required information is consistently captured and recorded.
Prepare and maintain records relating to SHE matters that comply with legal and workplace requirements and are accessible to those who are authorised to use them.
Present and hold an audience's attention, for example when delivering SHE training, toolbox talks, inductions or presenting data or investigation findings to the workforce or management team. Show they can sell the SHE message, have personal impact, deal with challenge, reflect on personal performance, use appropriate language for the audience.
The above list is not exhaustive, and on occasion, the role may need to undertake other reasonable requests as required by their line manager, in line with grade and competence.
What training will the apprentice take, and what qualification will the apprentice get at the end?
In addition to gaining a broad range of professional knowledge and experience, you will also gain academic and vocational qualifications, such as the Level 3 Safety, Health & Environment Technician Apprenticeship Standard. You will also achieve Level 2 Award in Industrial Environmental Awareness, as well as gaining professional recognition at Tech IOSH upon completion of the apprenticeship

Qualifications:
Applicants must have 4 x GCSE (at grade 4 to 9) or equivalent, including Maths, English and preferably a Science subject.
