Choosing a career is a big deal, right?

There are different options to consider, questions to ask.

So, to help make your decision that bit easier, let's start with this question: What's important to you?

We asked our current apprentices the same question and here's what they had to say:

Using the latest tech Career progression with tailored support A qualification without the debt Working in an environment where you're recognised for your abilities

If some of these resonate with you, you're in the right place.

Technology sits at the heart of everything we do at HMGCC, enabling us to solve the most difficult and challenging problems in support of the national security mission. You'll gain hands on experience working with diverse teams across many areas of the organisation, working with some of the most sophisticated technologies and engineering teams.

Our work is constantly evolving, which requires our engineers to provide novel solutions to unique and challenging problems. This requires us to work with the latest technologies as well as developing new skills in teamwork, communication, and leadership. Our tech stack can vary depending upon lots of different factors, but we typically use Python, C#, C/C++, Java, JS, as well as the latest deployment platforms including Azure and AWS. However please don't worry if you haven't heard of these before! You'll receive vast amounts of coaching, mentoring and support from experienced engineers across the organisation, as well as training from your degree, to help you along the way.

More About You

You'll already have or be predicted to achieve by September 2026:

72 UCAS points. GCSE grade 4/C or above in English Language and Maths or equivalent functional skills (Level 2).

You'll also have:

A keen interest in either programming, problem solving or technology.

Applicants prior to commencing this apprenticeship should not have completed or undertaken a Level 4 qualification or higher in a Software Engineering subject such as Computer Science.

Your Personal Skills

You will be the type of person who is:

Creative and curious in their style of thinking. Keen to share ideas and work as part of a team. Open minded and willing to try something new. Passionate to learn and develop their skills. Professional, honest and reliable. Interested in making a difference. Takes pride in doing your best in challenging situations.

The Scheme

Over the course of your apprenticeship, you'll split your time between our partner university where you will complete the knowledge and proficiency qualifications of the programme, and on-the-job training at HMGCC. There will be a requirement to travel to your training provider. You'll also receive paid for membership with a professional organisation such as the Institute of Engineering and Technology.

You will get involved in real-world projects from the beginning. Throughout the programme, you'll undertake various mentored work placements and customer projects which will give you hands-on experience to back up the theoretical learning.

During the first two years of the apprenticeship you will gain experience in Software Engineering, before specialising during your final year based on your preferences and business need. On completion of the scheme, you'll have a solid foundation to begin your career as a Software Developer.

A HMGCC apprenticeship gives you the career progression that matches your ambition. Your development doesn't end with the completion of your apprenticeship. You'll experience a career that's as varied and progressive as you want it to be.
