Archivist Job description
Basis:Part time
Contract Type:Permanent post
Contractual Hours:22.2 hours per week (flexible hours, worked over three days)
Annual Leave:35 days pro rata to 21 days including bank holidays
Location:Doncaster Deaf Trust
We are seeking a meticulous and passionate Archivist to join our team and take responsibility for the acquisition, cataloguing, preservation, and accessibility of our historical and contemporary records. This is a unique opportunity to play a key role in safeguarding our organisation's heritage and ensuring that valuable information is preserved for future generations.
About the Role
The Archivist will manage, preserve, and develop the Trust's archives and historical records, ensuring they are accessible, well-organised, and maintained in accordance with professional standards. The Archivist will support the Trust's heritage, identity, and compliance with record-keeping obligations.
Key Responsibilities

  • Organise, catalogue, and maintain physical and digital archives.
  • Develop and implement systems for storing and retrieving historical records.
  • Ensure the long-term preservation of materials using appropriate conservation techniques.
  • Facilitate access to archives for staff, researchers, and the public (where appropriate).
  • Respond to enquiries and support internal departments with historical information.
  • Promote the Trust's heritage through exhibitions, publications, or online platforms.
  • Ensure compliance with data protection and freedom of information legislation.
  • Maintain accurate records of acquisitions, loans, and disposals.
  • Develop policies and procedures for archival management.
  • Work with colleagues across the Trust to identify and preserve significant records.
  • Liaise with external bodies (e.g., local history groups, museums, libraries).
  • Support grant applications or funding opportunities related to heritage projects.

What We're Looking For
  • Minimum GCSE Level 4 or equivalent in English and Maths (or equivalent experience)
  • Proven experience of archival work or records management
  • Strong organisational and cataloguing skills
  • Familiarity with archival software and digital preservation tools.
  • Understanding of data protection and confidentiality requirements.
Desirable
  • Qualification in archives, record management, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of the education or charitable sector
  • Interest in Deaf History and heritage
