About the role


The Ashmolean Museum, part of the University of Oxford's Gardens, Libraries and Museums (GLAM), is seeking to appoint a professional Archivist and Records Manager.

This is a significant new role within the Directorate of Collections, based at the Ashmolean Museum on Beaumont Street, Oxford. The postholder will lead the development and management of the Museum's archive collections and operational records, enabling their full potential to be realised for research, teaching, and public engagement.

In this role, you will lead the cataloguing and digitisation of the Museum's archive collections to professional standards, in collaboration with the Department of Digital Collections and the curatorial departments. You will develop and implement records management procedures, including retention schedules and transfer processes. You will manage and train staff and volunteers working on archival projects. You will liaise with colleagues across the Museum to facilitate access to the archives for research, teaching, and public programming. You will advise on compliance with National Archives Accreditation standards and lead the Museum's application process.

This is a permanent, full-time position, working 37.5 hours per week. The role is based on-site due to working with physical collections; however, occasional working from home may be possible with line manager's approval.

About you


You will have a professionally recognised qualification in Archives and Records Management, or equivalent professional experience. You will have practical experience using professional standards for cataloguing archives, including ISAD(G) and EAD. You will be highly organised, with demonstrable project planning and delivery skills. You will have excellent IT skills, including experience with archive cataloguing software and spreadsheets. You will be familiar with GDPR and FOI requirements and able to handle sensitive materials with discretion.
