Brief Description

This is a really exciting opportunity to join us as Asset Engineer [Geotechnics], where you will, of course, spend much of your time out on the ground walking up and down slopes and examining earthworks and assessing Geo-Hazards. In addition you will become an integral part of the Asset Management Team through supporting the delivery of maintenance and refurbishment workbanks, responding to incidents and dealing with queries from neighbours or other Network Rail teams.

The Geotechnical Assets include Embankments, Soil Cuttings and Rock Cuttings as well as associated supporting structures. The Southern Region has many critical assets including many rock cuttings, clay embankments and a variety of coastal defences including Folkestone Warren (a large landslide complex in Kent) and Hooley Cutting (a long deep cutting with extensive history). You will ensure the earthworks assets are compliant to policy and process and respond to geotechnical asset issues on track. You will also play a key role interfacing with major projects and enhancements.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead the requirements for examination and undertake evaluation, assessment and risk management of geotechnical assets. Manage compliance of examination and evaluation of geotechnical assets against requirements of standards.
  • Provide engineering input to the standards and specifications for earthworks examinations and assessments.
  • Maintain comprehensive and accurate asset records.
  • Direct the implementation of monitoring systems and undertake the review of monitoring results and other control measures.
  • Support the development of route specific plans including all maintenance and renewal activities and asset strategies, providing the prioritised investment work bank. Support the inclusion of all investment items into appropriate programmes and track through to completion including approval of programme changes.
  • Provide support to the production and prioritisation of the route business plan. Support the Senior Earthworks and Drainage Management Engineer in producing remits for investment schemes.
  • Monitor trends arising from examinations and evaluations, assessments, asset capability and failure precursors and confirm that action is specified and taken and participate in investigations of incidents.
  • Liaise with community relations to support the resolution of geotechnical and drainage issues impacting on neighbours and third parties.
  • Provide engineering input to the specification and management of geotechnical and drainage examination contracts. Investigate and resolve technical and quality issues with suppliers.

Job Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Essential
  • HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Civil or Structural Engineering or equivalent geotechnical qualification.
  • Substantial experience of geotechnical asset examination and assessment
  • An understanding of safety management systems and risk assessment techniques
  • Awareness of Construction Design and Management Regulations
  • Working towards membership of a relevant professional institution
Desirable
  • Degree in a relevant subject
  • Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer
  • Member of a relevant professional institution
