About the Company


Blyth Accountants is a growing independent practice in Glasgow, supporting a diverse portfolio of small and medium-sized businesses with bookkeeping, accounts, tax compliance and advisory services. The practice is currently operated by a sole proprietor, with ambitious plans for expansion and the creation of a collaborative team environment where staff can develop their skills and progress professionally.

The Role


We are seeking two part-time experienced Assistant Accountants with a background in accountancy practice work. The role will commence on the 2nd of February 2026. You must be based in Glasgow or surrounding areas. The position will begin remotely and transition to an office-based position once office premises have been secured.

As an Assistant Accountant, you will work closely with your peers and the business owner to gain hands-on experience across all aspects of accounting and client management. Your role will include processing transactions, maintaining financial records, preparing reports, and supporting client compliance tasks. This position is ideal for a recent graduate who is beginning their ACCA studies and looking to build a strong foundation within an established practice that also has had experience working in an accountancy practice environment.

Key Responsibilities


The successful candidate will undertake a wide range of practice-based duties, including:

Bookkeeping using Xero, FreeAgent, Sage and other relevant platforms. Preparing and filing VAT returns. Processing and filing confirmation statements. Managing payroll and CIS processing, submissions and reporting. Reconciling bank accounts, purchase ledgers, sales ledgers and client records. Preparing management accounts. Assisting with year-end accounts for limited companies, sole traders and partnerships. Liaising with HMRC regarding client tax affairs, payroll and CIS matters. Communicating directly with clients to gather information, resolve queries and provide updates. Maintaining accurate digital records and ensuring a robust audit trail. Supporting the general running of the practice through light administrative duties. Longer term: assisting in the training and supervision of junior staff as the practice grows.

Requirements



A degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline. Proven experience working in an accountancy practice environment. Strong and demonstrable experience in CIS processing, submissions and compliance. Solid bookkeeping skills across multiple platforms, including Xero, FreeAgent and Sage. A solid understanding of basic bookkeeping principles, debits and credits. Confident understanding of VAT rules and reporting requirements. Experience in payroll processing and HMRC correspondence. Excellent communication skills and a professional client-facing manner. High levels of accuracy, organisation and initiative. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and manage tasks proactively Strong IT skills, particularly with Excel, Word and PDF. High attention to detail and strong numerical accuracy. A proactive attitude with a willingness to learn and develop.

Desirable



Previous work experience in an accountancy practice, for a minimum of 2 years. Currently undergoing exams with ACCA, CIMA or a similar professional body.
