25+ due to vehicle insurance and must hold a full driving license for 2 years.
Understand and be able to communicate fluently in English.
Be in good health and able to meet the demands of lifting, carrying, working outdoors in all weather etc.
Reasonably flexible with working hours.
Role 1:
Working Monday to Friday - 8am to 4:30pm
Role 2:
Working Tuesday to Friday - 6am to 2:30pm and Saturday 8:30am to 5pm
Role 3:
Working Monday to Friday, Currently 11:00am to 7:30pm but this will change to 1:30pm to 10pm at some point in the future so the candidate would need to be aware of this pending change.
To support the Facilities Manager in maintaining a clean, safe, secure, and fit-for-purpose environment across the School's buildings and grounds. The Assistant Caretaker plays a vital role in ensuring that school facilities support the intellectual, physical, emotional, and social development of pupils. Duties include caretaking, cleaning, porterage, basic maintenance, security, and groundskeeping to ensure the smooth day-to-day functioning of the school premises.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
1. Facilities Maintenance
Perform daily and periodic cleaning tasks across classrooms, corridors, toilets, offices, communal areas and external areas in line with school schedule and as required.
Carry out minor repairs to furniture, fixtures, and fittings, as well as basic decorating tasks.
Report any damage, defects, or hazards to the Facilities Manager promptly.
Ensure proper use and upkeep of cleaning and maintenance equipment.
2. Security
Act as a keyholder, unlocking/locking buildings, checking alarms, and ensuring all areas are secure.
Opening and closing of premises and buildings as directed by line manager or member of SLT.
Operate intruder and fire alarm systems and report faults promptly.
Attend out-of-hours incidents (e.g. break-ins, vandalism) when required and secure the premises once cleared.
Report suspicious activity, breaches of security, or incidents involving hazardous materials (e.g., used needles, illegal substances) in line with school policy.
Ensure external doors, windows, and gates are secured at the end of each day.
Directing traffic and managing car parking during peak times, including events held outside of the normal working hours.
Providing cover for gatekeeper absence / leave.
Controlling pedestrian and vehicular access to the school grounds.
3. Mechanical and Electrical Services
Assist with the efficient operation of heating/boiler systems to support energy conservation.
Replace lamps, tubes, and plugs (up to 3.35m), excluding overhead access from above.
Monitor and log usage of utilities (electricity, fuel, water).
Report faults in plant and firefighting equipment to the Facilities Manager.
4. Groundskeeping and Outdoor Maintenance
Carry out grass cutting, strimming, edging, and hedge trimming using appropriate machinery.
Apply weed control measures, including safe and appropriate use of chemical weed killers in line with current health and safety/environmental regulations.
Maintain external walkways, paths, play areas, and car parks in a safe and tidy condition.
Carrying out leaf clearing, applying grit or salt, and shovelling snow during adverse weather.
Check and maintain grounds maintenance tools; reporting any faults or safety concerns promptly.
5. Cleaning
Clean assigned areas as directed, including reactive cleaning (e.g., spills, flooding, vandalism).
Maintain clean, litter-free external hard surfaces and decorative grounds.
Ensure kitchen grease-traps and external drains/gullies (up to 3.35m) are unblocked and clean.
Clean and disinfect refuse bins and empty internal/external litter bins daily.
Replenish hygiene supplies (toilet rolls, soap, paper towels) as needed.
Clean external signage, lights, and noticeboards (up to 3.35m).
6. Porterage driving and Logistics
Moving of furniture and equipment as required for teaching, examinations, or events.
Assist with the setup of school functions (e.g., staging, AV equipment, seating).
Transport pupils / items between school buildings and sites, including Inchmarlo, using school 9 seater vehicle when required.
Move refuse bins to and from collection points.
7. Health, Safety, and Compliance
Take reasonable care of personal health and safety and that of others by adhering to the school Health and Safety policies and procedures.
Use and store cleaning chemicals in line with COSHH regulations.
Use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
Ensure that all work is carried out in a safe manner, reporting risks immediately.
8. Driving
Drives School 9 seater vehicle as required.
Transport staff and pupils on trips to various locations; planning necessary route(s) and stops as needed.
Maintains order and proper discipline of pupil passengers according School policies.
Conduct safety and operational inspection of assigned vehicle.
Report needed mechanical repairs when necessary
Wash vehicles as needed.
9. Working Environment
Work indoors and outdoors including during adverse weather conditions.
Perform physically demanding tasks including lifting, bending, and working at height using ladders or other equipment.
Maintain clean and safe conditions across all access routes and external areas.
10. Lone Working
Frequently work independently without supervision, including early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends.
Be reliable, responsible, and capable of following lone-working procedures and risk assessments provided by the School.
11. Team Support and Flexibility
Collaborate effectively with the Facilities Manager and other caretaking staff to ensure full task coverage.
Provide support to teaching and administrative staff as needed.
Perform other reasonable duties appropriate to the role and grade as assigned by the Facilities Manager.
Be flexible to cover other duties during absences or changing circumstances.
