Salary: \xc2\xa325,409 to \xc2\xa327,852 per annum (pro rata for part time)

Contract Type: Fixed Term Contract for 7 months (full time) OR 14 months (part time)

Working Pattern: Full time (37 hours per week) or Part time (18.5 hours per week) Monday to Friday

Location: West Sussex Record Office, 3 Orchard Street, Chichester, PO19 1DD

We have an exciting opportunity for a paper, book or archive conservator to work on a project funded by the National Manuscripts Conservation Trust (NMCT) and Pilgrim Trust, entitled Ordinary Voices Revealed: conserving the working papers of the Consistory Court of the Archdeaconry of Chichester. The successful candidate will work with our Senior Conservator in the conservation studio at West Sussex Record Office in Chichester.

The project is predominantly focused on practical conservation work of Episcopal Records from the Chichester Diocese, dating from 1554-1851. Other tasks include:

  • Providing document handling training and ongoing assistance to volunteers cataloguing the collection.
  • Keeping accurate treatment records on our collections management database, CALM.
  • Liaising with wider Record Office staff where relevant to the project.
  • Participating in outreach activities to promote the project.
There is scope for engagement in further in-house or external professional development opportunities, depending on the project\xe2\x80\x99s progress.

The successful candidate should have, or be enthusiastic to develop, the following skills:
  • Technical proficiency working with degraded or vulnerable paper and parchment documents.
  • The ability to work well independently and with others.
  • Self-motivation and passion for archives conservation.
  • The ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with a range of stakeholders.
  • Accurate record-keeping.
  • Time management skills with the ability to prioritise work to meet deadlines.
The role is ideally suited for a recent graduate or early career conservator. Conservators from other specialisms and unqualified candidates with relevant experience will also be considered, providing transferable skills and applicable knowledge are demonstrated.
