Manchester is a special place. A regionally and globally significant city, it's the nucleus of the largest metropolitan area in the north of England. Vibrant, lively, diverse, cosmopolitan and ambitious, the city continues to develop as a centre of national and international significance, where residents and businesses alike benefit from ongoing economic and social improvements.
We're well aware that our communities and residents face real challenges in relation to inequalities and we need to improve health outcomes across all of Manchester compared to other parts of the country. We're totally committed to responding to this challenge, narrowing the gap between the healthiest and least healthy, and improving health and life chances across the city.
The Role
We're looking for a public health visionary
Interested? Then please watch this about Manchester. Then, it's over to you: how would you picture and write the script for a sequel in 4 years' time? Because that's what we want, people with vision who can help with that Manchester magic.
At the heart of Manchester is spirit, friendship, ambition, diversity and drive - and we want all our communities to be part of it. For that we need an exceptional public health professional to join our dynamic team.
We have an exciting opportunity for a registered Consultant in Public Health/Public Health Medicine to join the leadership team of the Department of Public Health - driving the approach to improving health equity across the city. The Assistant Director of Public Health will have a specific portfolio of responsibility for Health Improvement and Health Creation, as well as providing leadership for the department and promoting health equity across all the domains of public health and life course areas.
The Health Improvement and Health Creation Portfolio
This role will focus on "upstream" prevention - working with partners to tackle the social determinants of health inequalities as well as leading life course specific workstreams for children and young people, and older people. Making Manchester Fairer (MMF) is the city's plan to improve health equity with a strong focus on the impact of poverty, housing, work, and the environment as well as racism and discrimination - recognising that a significant of Manchester's diverse population don't have the same opportunities to be healthy and well or to reach their full potential. The Assistant Director with this portfolio will support the DPH in leading the MMF programme and, importantly, the integrated Anti-Poverty Strategy. They will have a key role in ensuring that community voice and place-based approaches are at the heart of what we do.
We invite applications from those who have completed higher specialist training in public health or equivalent and are on the GMC/GDC Specialist Register or UK Public Health (Specialist) Register.
