Lufton College
Lufton College is a 52-week residential specialist college providing quality care and education for young people between the ages of 16 and 25 with a diagnosis of autism, or whose difficulties place them on the autistic continuum. Our students often have complex needs, associated learning difficulties and behaviours of concern. Our curriculum has been devised to prepare our students for adulthood and to equip them with the skills and knowledge to achieve their personal best. This is delivered in a variety of settings, including within students' homes, vocational placements both internally and externally. As well as learning within the classrooms, our young people take part in various outdoor activities such as animal therapy and various activities based around nature throughout the college sites.
The college is continuing on their journey of improving our provision, and the past academic year has been focused on improving the quality of education, our environment and developing the collaboration between care, education and our clinical team input and support.
Lufton College is within a rural setting on the outskirts of Yeovil spread across 3 sites with over 40 acres, with forest area, small farm areas and ample outdoor spaces.
Main Responsibilities
Lead on strategic curriculum development of core curriculum areas (Literacy and Numeracy) and quality assurance of curriculums across the college.
To lead and undertake quality assurance activity as directed by the Assistant Principal, such as scrutiny of curriculum planning, learning walks, formal observations, and scrutiny of student progress data.
To line manage and support the ongoing professional development of SEN Tutors and Teachers as directed by the Assistant Principal, including being the lead Teacher for Tutors training to become teachers (Level 5 apprentices and QTLS)
To deliver coaching and training to education staff in line with the college's continuous quality improvement plan and cycle, assisted by the wider team.
To act as Education Head in the absence of the Assistant Principal, ensuring the provision within the education team continues to run effectively and safely.
Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, collaborating with all college colleagues in care and education, aiming to expand the horizons and improve the skills of young people.
To be an active part of the Senior Management team, including attending relevant meetings, reviewing attendance, KPI's and self-directed action setting to support the college governance targets.
To be on timetable to deliver specialism to students for up to 20% depending on student and college need (to include co-teaching to develop Tutors and Teachers pedagogy).
Requirements
Post-Graduate Certificate in Education
Degree in relevant subject (transferable to college curriculum)
At least 2 years' experience as a curriculum lead or in a similar role with additional responsibility relating to quality of education and/or training or coaching teachers NPQ.
At least 3 years' experience as a qualified teacher within an education facility.
Understanding of Gatsby Benchmarks for SEND
Understanding of Autism and Learning Disabilities, and the impact that complex needs may have on ability to learn, and adapted learning opportunities.
Knowledge of Keeping Children Safe in Education including the prevent agenda safeguarding principles for adults and children.
Clean and current driving licence

Based at 3 sites the college offers residential and day courses to students aged 16 to 25. All students develop individual learning plans and personal tutors help them to monitor their own progress. There are opportunities to work towards National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs).

Mencap National College Lufton was established in 1969 and is a residential further education college offering tailor-made courses to prepare students for the next stage in their lives. Our students are aged 16-25 and come from all over the country. There are currently 111 students of which 106 are residents and five day students.
The college is based over two sites in a 70-acre estate on the rural outskirts of Yeovil, Somerset.
A small farm is home to many animals including calves, cockatiels, chickens, chinchilla, chipmunks, donkeys, finches, goats, geese, guinea pigs, guinea fowl, horses, rabbits, sheep, mice, pigs, pheasant and ducks.
The estate has well-equipped facilities such as a vehicle valeting bay, green houses, gardens, cafe, training kitchen, refectory, workshops for art, pottery and woodwork, IT suite, lakeside facilities, sports hall and other leisure services.
