About the Role



We are seeking a proactive and skilled

Assistant HR Business Partner

to support the HR Operations team in delivering high-quality HR advice, employee relations guidance, and operational support across the organisation.

The successful candidate will work closely with managers, staff and HR colleagues to resolve employee issues, support organisational change, deliver accurate HR advice, and contribute to HR policy development and project work.

This role is key in helping managers achieve both local and wider organisational objectives through effective people management, coaching and professional challenge.

Key Responsibilities



HR Advisory & Employee Relations



Provide accurate HR advice and guidance to managers and staff on policies, procedures, terms and conditions, and employment legislation. Support, coach and challenge line managers on a range of people management issues including disciplinary, grievance, attendance and performance matters. Build constructive relationships with managers, employees and trade union representatives to facilitate timely resolution of cases. Support the HR Business Partner in complex employee relations issues and HR project work as required.

Case Management & HR Operations



Manage a range of HR casework, ensuring timely progression, accurate documentation and compliance with organisational procedures. Maintain and update the casework database and provide HR metrics and reporting information to senior stakeholders. Undertake job evaluations using benchmarking data and ensure fair, objective assessments. Advise on redeployment opportunities and assist in matching staff to suitable vacancies.

Recruitment, Selection & Workforce Support



Advise and support managers on recruitment processes, ensuring compliance with organisational standards. Participate in staff appointments where appropriate. Support directorates in understanding and acting on their people data, including sickness, turnover and grievance trends.

HR Policy, Development & Continuous Improvement



Contribute to HR policy development and review. Conduct research and assist with preparing briefing papers and project documentation. Support HR colleagues and line managers in developing their HR capability through coaching and guidance. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of HR legislation and best practice.

Collaboration & Communication



Ensure effective communication with colleagues and stakeholders on HR matters, emerging trends and ongoing work. Participate in working groups and represent HR Operations at internal meetings as required. Work flexibly to meet service needs and undertake duties aligned with the purpose and level of the role.

Ideal Candidate ProfileEssential Skills & Experience



CIPD qualified or currently working towards CIPD with relevant HR experience. Strong track record of providing balanced HR advice and guidance. Significant experience managing HR casework including disciplinary, grievance, attendance and performance issues. Up-to-date employment law knowledge and the ability to apply it effectively. Experience supporting senior managers with complex HR matters. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong analytical ability to interpret HR, financial and performance data. Ability to influence, challenge and build strong, professional relationships. Experience working in a customer-focused HR environment. Ability to coach managers and develop HR colleagues. Ability to evaluate complex information and find practical, legally compliant solutions.

Desirable



Experience working in a large or complex organisation. Awareness of EDI considerations and ability to promote inclusive workplace practices.
