ABOUT THE ROLE

Northumbria University had the biggest rise in research power ranking of any UK University in the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), rising to 23rd having previously been place 50th in 2014 and 80th in 2008. As a result of these successes the wishes to expand and diversify our academic base in the civil engineering team. The core research strengths of this team include remote sensing, geotechnics, slope geomorphology, coastal engineering, archeaohydrology, sustainable water management, transportation, the asset condition of infrastructure, recycled construction materials, big data, steel structures, modular building, plate and shell structures and fire safety. We would welcome applications for Assistant Professor/Lecturer from suitably-qualified individuals across all areas of civil engineering.

We are particularly interested in hearing from candidates with strengths in any of the following areas:

  • Water supply and transport, hydraulics in general,
  • Environmental Engineering,
  • Geotechnics.
However, we will consider high-quality applications in any area relevant to our teaching or research activities, and we particularly encourage applicants who are researching in earth observation and remote sensing. You will be part of a growing team, with a lively academic community, based on our campus in the centre of Newcastle.

You will contribute to educational activities in the Department and Faculty including undertaking individual and joint research to produce high-quality academic outputs; designing, developing and delivering high-quality teaching activities; and participating in external activity to generate income and promote the civil engineering subject. We value applicants that display good academic citizenship including mentoring and supporting colleagues, promoting good practice across all aspects of academic life.

You must be qualified to Doctoral level in a relevant discipline and have subject expertise in Civil Engineering with specialist knowledge gained through research activity, professional practice or consultancy. We seek a commitment to, and enthusiasm for, delivering innovative education at all levels. If you are not already experienced at higher education teaching, you will be supported by the University to become a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).
