Job Description

We have a fantastic opportunity for you to join our client, Northern Ireland Civil Service, based in Belfast as a full-time Assistant Scientific Officer. This is a long-term temporary opportunity.
Our client is Northern Ireland's Leading Public Sector Employer.
Administrator Pay Rate: 13.75
Start Date: ASAP
Key Accountabilities:
Knowledge of the working environment

  • Understanding of the laboratory environment.
  • Understanding of how they contribute to the overall performance of the laboratory.
  • Fully conversant with all policies and procedures as relevant to their role.
  • Understanding of their responsibilities within the QMS and technical operating procedures.
People
  • Working with, supporting and providing cover for other team members to achieve results.
  • Ensuring relevant staff are kept fully informed of developments.
Achieving results
  • Carrying out recovery and examinations.
  • Carrying out analytical tests.
  • Delivering results against instructions accurately and in line with expected deadlines.
  • Exhibit storage and retrieval.
  • Preparation of laboratory reagents and solvents.
  • Making appropriate records as work proceeds, ensuring results are accurately recorded and Sample Manager and Casebook Management System are updated.
  • Attending court/case conferences, as appropriate.
  • Attending and assisting in the forensic examination of scenes of crime.
  • May be required to undertake other duties as required e.g. sectional finance support.
  • May be required to work an on-call rota operation.
Quality
  • Ensuring results are validated through carrying out appropriate quality checks.
  • Completing all work in line with FSNI accepted quality standards and technical operating procedures
H&S and Equality
  • Adhering to all policies and procedures in relation to Health and Safety and Equality e.g. COSHH.
  • Identifying and managing risks reporting any issues to their manager.
Services
  • Establish the needs and expectations of customers and deal with them appropriately.

  • Ensuring relevant technical competencies are maintained and skills developed to maximise flexibility across the Laboratory.
Qualifications and experience
  • 4 GCE/GCSE 'O' levels, grades A - C. These must include English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject.
  • 6 months relevant experience in the last 5 years.
