Associate Clinical Nurse Specialist -Urology, Band 6



A fantastic opportunity has arisen for an experienced nurse who is enthusiastic and motivated to develop in the role as Associate Specialist Nurse in Urology Service.



A high level of clinical decision making is required for this post therefore sound theoretical and practical knowledge is required from an experienced nurse who strives to maintain clinical excellence.



The role will involve nurse-led Urology service in the outpatient clinic. Help with management of urology patients in the ward.



The successful candidate will have urology experience, be highly motivated and driven to improve patient care. The candidate must have exceptional communication and interpersonal skills. They will also have well-developed clinical and professional leadership skills to encourage and promote best outcomes for patients, their relatives, and carers.



You will need excellent communication skills be able to deliver education and advice to patients, carers and health care professionals and be able to demonstrate your ability to work and make clinical decisions autonomously.



Work clinically as an Associate Specialist Nurse in Urology, delivering and maintaining high standards of care to patients with benign and malignant urological conditions/ disease.



To work with and support the Uro-oncology CNS and Advanced Nurse/Clinical Practitioners contributing to the development and promotion of the urology and Trust wide nursing service ensuring the delivery of high quality, patient focused, compassionate and cost effective care.



To contribute to the education of other clinical staff in understanding the care requirements of urology/uro-oncology patients undergoing investigations and treatments and ensure that the physical and psychological needs of the patients and their families are met.



To undertake Nurse-Led clinics for trial without catheter, complex catheter change, bladder instillations for benign conditions and urodynamic studies (when appropriately trained) and additionally intra-vesical chemo/immunotherapy in the clinic setting and ward setting as required to cross cover the service.



Ensure efficient pathway management according to the relevant 18 week and cancer targets, ordering tests, screening referrals and arranging treatments to facilitate this as per protocol with the support of the urology team



To promote and maintain effective communication with the multi-disciplinary team, patient and carers.

Clinical



Undertake nurse-led clinics with the support of the urology ANP and urology CNS



Undertake screening of referrals to ensure efficient use of clinic time and minimisation of wasted clinic slots



Undertake bladder instillations for benign disease, trial without catheter and complex catheter changes



P articipate as required in the weekly multidisciplinary team meetings, work with the urology team to help co-ordinate the patient pathways (benign and malignant) informing the patients GPs of decisions made



After appropriate training, request diagnostic investigations e.g. blood tests, endoscopic examinations, and imaging



Undertaking intra-vesical chemotherapy and immunotherapy for superficial bladder cancers and arrange appropriate follow up according to evidence based protocols with support of Band 7 clinical nurse specialist



Prepare patients for procedures over the telephone, ensuring they are suitably prepared for out-patient procedures such as flexible cystoscopy and inpatient procedures e.g. prostate biopsies



Offer advice on the wards in relation to urology nursing care/continence issues as requested and appropriat



Co-ordinate the care of patients diagnosed with urological cancer to ensure prompt treatment in line with national access standards of 18 weeks and cancer targets as directed and supported by the Uro-oncology CNS and wider Urology team

Leadership/Networking :

Provide support and advice to all appropriate staff/colleagues to enhance patient care



Engage in effective communication, involving all members of the multidisciplinary team



Foster the continued development of the urology service within the Trust by maintaining personal development and keeping up to date with evidence based best practice



Work across care settings to achieve optimum continuity of care of patients with catheters and urological diseases proving advice to ward staff, community staff and carers



Act as an effective role model



Develop and maintain relationships with urology nurses/colleagues within the Royal Marsden Partnership to share learning and identify best practice.



To be familiar with national, professional and local quality issues relevant to the delivery of nursing services, e.g clinical governance, national peer review.
