About us
The UCL History of Art Department is seeking to appoint a part-time Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in the Conservation of Contemporary Art & Media to cover the maternity leave of a member of academic staff from 1 January 2026 for 12 months. The position is offered at 0.2FTE (equivalent to one day per week).
Based at the in Stratford, the postholder will teach on the . This innovative programme extends the Department's teaching and research strengths while providing for the rapidly developing training needs of the next generation of conservators, and conservation professionals looking to develop a specialism in the field of contemporary art. The focus of the programme is on contemporary sculpture, installation art, complex mixed media works and time-based media works of art and contemporary design.
The MSc has two dedicated spaces in the Marshgate Building at UCL East; an objects conservation laboratory supported by a part time lab manager who is a conservation scientist and a media conservation studio supported by a part time studio manager. The MSc Conservation of Contemporary Art & Media forms part of the group of programmes, which is designed to enable collaborative approaches and experimental practice across Faculties, as well as with neighbouring institutions at the Olympic Park, including the Victoria and Albert Museum.
About the role
The postholder will offer teaching focused on contemporary materials, and the examination, analysis and conservation of contemporary sculpture and design objects. As a member of teaching staff you will work closely as part of the Programme Team to deliver the MSc Conservation of Contemporary Art & Media, based at UCL East.
The postholder will be asked to support students' practical projects in the Conservation Laboratory involving sculpture and modern materials. They will support the practical work for dissertations that focus on sculpture, installation and contemporary design, and will co-teach a module on the Conservation of Contemporary Materials in the summer term. In the Autumn they will teach a module on Science of Contemporary Materials, which explores materials commonly used by contemporary artists.
About you
The focus of this position is to support the students' practical conservation work on sculpture and design objects. The postholder will offer teaching focused on the conservation of contemporary sculpture, modern materials and design objects. As a member of teaching staff, you will work closely as part of the Programme Team to deliver the MSc Conservation of Contemporary Art & Media, based at UCL East.
You will be a dynamic and established practitioner with a strong track record of practice in your area of specialism (for example, the conservation of contemporary art, design, modern materials). Committed to critically assessing and developing new approaches to the conservation of contemporary art, you will be able to equip students with the necessary practical, decision-making and communication skills for conservation practice in a wide-range of settings; enable students' investigation of the theoretical and ethical dimensions of the conservation of complex contemporary artworks, and encourage experimental, collaborative and inclusive approaches to learning.

As a part-time role, this position would suit a conservation professional with a foothold in practice.
