About the Department

UCL Mechanical Engineering has been pioneering the development of engineering education, having taught the core discipline for over 170 years. UCL was home to the UK's first-ever Professor of the Mechanical Principles of Engineering, Eaton Hodgkinson, in 1847. It was also where Sir Alexander Blackie William Kennedy introduced organised laboratory practicals in university education training, a world-leading educational innovation at the time. Today our students are taught core engineering disciplines and supervised in individual and group research projects by academics that are recognised research world-leaders in their fields.



At UCL Mechanical Engineering, we develop and apply core competencies to produce world-class research into a wider range of engineering challenges than most would imagine. Amongst many other avenues, we are exploring:


Designing lightweight materials and structures for structural, thermal and space applications Developing new processes and properties for additively manufactured materials Manufacturing and testing sustainable materials and structures for the circular economy Advanced manufacturing for marine applications Studying the micro/nanoscale thermofluidic technologies

World-leading educational innovation continues to this day. We have invested in a new workshop facility dedicated to teaching practical engineering, called MechSpace. It is a tailored space with Computer Aided Design and Manufacturing (CAD/CAM) capabilities to support multiple engineering projects, through the full design cycle: investigate, design, analyse, build, test and implement.

About the role

------------------


The main purpose of this role is to contribute to and support teaching in our mechanical engineering undergraduate programme and post graduate taught programmes.



The post holder may have some elements of involvement at every level of our programmes. This will include, for instance, introductory (UG Y1-Y2) level modules in design and mechanics, and/or specialist (UG Y3-Y4/Masters) design and project modules related. The successful candidate will lead teaching sessions and workshops, evaluate student presentations, and participate in departmental outreach activities.



The role holder will have an excellent level of technical background in mechanical engineering. They will contribute to the implementation of a high-quality curriculum and will assist in the development of learning materials, preparing schemes of work and maintaining records to monitor student progress, achievement and attendance.



The successful applicant will be a natural and effective communicator first and foremost, with an interest in higher education.
