Position Details School of Education Location: University of Birmingham, Edgbaston, Birmingham UK Full time starting salary is normally in the range £51,799 to £60,022, with potential progression once in post to £78,265 Grade 9 Full Time Permanent Closing date: 6th June 2022 Summary of Role The Department of Education and Social Justice in the School of Education seeks to appoint an Associate Professor in Language, Social Justice and Education. They will bring an active world-class interdisciplinary research agenda in these inter-related areas and ability to provide specialist teaching on the MSc TESOL Education and MEd Bilingualism in Education. You will contribute at a senior level to teaching, research, and administration. In addition you will be expected to contribute to academic citizenship, likely to be demonstrated through generous, mutually respectful and supportive working relationships with all staff and students. Teaching is likely to include: (a) development and leadership of major teaching programmes or equivalent; and (b) enhancement of the student experience or employability. The successful candidate will have demonstrable success in teaching and learning in Higher Education using a variety of methods and be an engaged and inspiring educator with an excellent understanding of innovative and inclusive practices. Module contributions are likely to include: Second Language Learning, Second Language Teaching Methodology, Language Discourse and Society. There may be scope to develop new areas of teaching related to the appointee’s expertise. Research is likely to involve an established national and international reputation through significant original research work and a clear record of impact. Management and administration is likely to include Departmental/School leadership and management activity with University wide involvement – for example through sustained high value research, knowledge transfer, enterprise, business engagement, and public engagement or similar activities. The candidate is expected to demonstrate qualities of academic leadership commensurate with career stage and to be a ‘good citizen’ generally. This will require the ability to take on leadership roles as appropriate whilst contributing to student recruitment and other School activities. The candidate will have a PhD or (near to completion) in applied linguistics, language in education or cognate field. Main Duties / Responsibilities
