Job Description

The Associate Practitioner in Audiology will provide interventions with routine/non-complex hearing pathologies/disabilities for the county of Carmarthenshire as part of the Hywel Dda Audiology Service.



The post holder will be based at one of the main hospital locations but will be expected to travel between sites. The post will involve developing the individual care/management plan with appropriate accountability to the Audiologist.



The Associate Audiologist is not an independent practitioner, and it is anticipated that training, clinical supervision and mentoring will be planned during the normal schedule of the working day.



The Associate Practitioner will have obtained appropriate education, training and skills in hearing testing, fitting of hearing aids and working to locally and nationally agreed protocols in conjunction with scope of practice and accountability.



To help manage the daily requirements of Audiology Services across the health board in response to services demands.



To provide and assist with basic adult hearing aid rehabilitation and to deliver the patient individual management plan (under indirect supervision).



To perform routine Audiological investigations such as puretone audiometry for hearing aid re-assessments, aural impressions and programming and evaluation of hearing aid systems, which would include real ear measurements.



To assess needs, plan and implement appropriate rehabilitation strategies for new and existing hearing aid users.



To explain and advise on the intervention strategy, discussing decisions with patients/significant parties and amending when necessary.



Obtaining suitable ear impressions for the manufacture of ear moulds and the selection of suitable ear moulds.



The selection, testing and acoustic fitting of the latest technology hearing aids to required protocols and procedures. Using the latest computerised systems to programme the specified hearing aid. Fine tuning the amplification according to patient feedback and interpretation of outcome measures.



To provide a hearing aid maintenance and repair service. This will include cleaning, modification, repair or replacement, advice, basic counselling and instruction services.



Hywel Dda University Health Board plans and provides NHS healthcare services for people living in Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties.



We have over 13,000 staff and together we provide primary, community, in-hospital, mental health and learning disabilities services.



We work in partnership with the three local authorities, as well as public, private and third sector colleagues, including our valued team of volunteers.



Our services are provided in:



Four main hospitals:

Bronglais Hospital in Aberystwyth; Glangwili Hospital in Carmarthen; Prince Philip Hospital in Llanelli; and Withybush Hospital in Haverfordwest

Five community hospitals:

Amman Valley and Llandovery hospitals in Carmarthenshire; Tregaron Hospital in Ceredigion; and Tenby and South Pembrokeshire hospitals in Pembrokeshire

Two integrated care centres:

Aberaeron and Cardigan in Ceredigion, and several other community settings

47 general practices (six of which are health board managed practices); dental practices (including four orthodontic); 97 community pharmacies; 43 general ophthalmic practices; and 8 ophthalmic domiciliary providers

Numerous mental health and learning disabilities services



To participate and assist with paediatric audiological assessments and support Audiology Practitioners when performing domiciliary visits for house bound patients.



The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post; English and/or Welsh speakers are equally welcome to apply.
