About the role

Why would you wish to be an Autism Support Practitioner with the Adult and Autism team? The current Autism Support Practitioners explain:


"Autistic people see and experience the world around them differently from others. We support people to keep and celebrate their autistic attributes, whilst developing their skills, and work with wider organisations to increase their Autism acceptance. It is very rewarding when we succeed."


We are looking for an Autism Support Practitioner to work within the Autism and Adult Team for 21hrs/wk on a permanent basis. The Autism Support Practitioner role focuses on those with Autism, and no associated learning disability, aged 18-75. We also offer support to those moving into adult services from Children's social care, who have Autism.


We provide a supportive team, with regular supervision and a concentration on further training and learning opportunities.


The role is based at Amundsen House, St Ives, but covers the county of Cambridgeshire.

What will you be doing?

The basis of all the Autism Support Practitioners work is to support people to no longer need them! As such the role focuses on time limited, preventative work and upskilling, looking to support choice, control and positive risk taking.


About you

Lived experience of Autism, or experience of working with those with Autism is essential, including a working knowledge of the Autism Act 2009 and Equality Act 2010. The role is varied, and you will work with individuals on their self-identified outcomes, which may cover areas such as housing, benefits, employment, the criminal justice system, structure and routines and understanding Autism.


Understanding and experience within some of these areas is required, with support available to develop skills in areas you have less experience of. A willingness to share your knowledge and skills with others, both those in the team and within wider organisation, will be helpful. Knowledge of wider resources and services is also required.


No two days will ever be the same and there is scope for home and office-based working, alongside visiting people in their own homes, to support their wellbeing.
