Automation Engineer - Installation & Service



Location:

Field-based (Northern Region - Based around Leeds)

Salary:

38k to 42k

JOB PURPOSE



A field-based role, requiring travel to client sites across the UK to install, service, and maintain automated entry systems such as roller shutter doors, powered pedestrian doors electric gates, barriers, bollards and turnstiles.



The role requires a strong mix of electrical and mechanical skills, with expertise in automation systems, fault diagnosis, and hands-on repairs. Working independently or as part of a team, ensuring installations meet industry safety and compliance standards while delivering excellent customer service.



Key Responsibilities



1. Installation & Commissioning



Install a variety of automated gates, barriers, bollards, turnstiles, roller shutter doors and powered pedestrian doors at residential, commercial, and industrial sites. Configure, wire, and program control panels, ensuring correct operation of motors, safety devices, and automation components. Test and commission installed systems, ensuring full functionality and compliance with safety standards.

2. Servicing & Maintenance



Perform routine servicing and preventative maintenance on existing automated systems. Carry out safety inspections and compliance checks to ensure continued adherence to industry regulations (e.g. BS EN 12453 / BS EN 16005). Recommend upgrades or replacements where necessary to enhance system performance.

3. Fault-Finding & Repairs



Diagnose electrical and mechanical faults in automation systems, using troubleshooting techniques to resolve issues efficiently. Repair or replace faulty components such as motors, control panels, safety sensors, and access control devices. Provide emergency breakdown support and participate in occasional on-call rota.

4. Technical & Compliance Responsibilities



Ensure all work complies with health & safety regulations and industry standards. Complete risk assessments and method statements before carrying out any work. Maintain accurate job records, service reports, and documentation.

5. Customer Service & Team Collaboration



Liaise professionally with clients, providing expert advice on automation solutions. Work closely with project managers, office staff, and fellow engineers to ensure seamless service delivery. Provide training to end-users on system functionality and basic troubleshooting.

6. Work Location & Travel Requirements:



The role is predominantly field based with occasional time required at central or regional offices. This role requires occasional travel and overnight stays in hotels when working away from home. While not a regular occurrence, employees should be prepared to travel as needed to meet business requirements. Additionally, the position includes participation in a weekend on-call rota, where engineers may be required to attend site at short notice. Flexibility and a willingness to respond to urgent requirements are essential for this role.

Person Specification



Essential Skills & Experience:



Proven experience as an Automation Engineer, Field Service Engineer, or similar role within the gate automation, roller shutter door, or powered pedestrian door industries. Strong electrical and mechanical skills with basic knowledge of hydraulic systems Knowledge of equipment manufacturers such as Hormann, Stertil, Dormakaba, Horton, Parking Facilities, Eagle Automation, COVA , FAAC, BFT, etc. Ability to diagnose and repair electrical and mechanical faults effectively. Experience working with low-voltage systems, safety components (photocells, safety edges, lasers), and access control devices (intercoms, keypads, RFID readers). Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, wiring schematics, and circuit diagrams. Good knowledge of health & safety regulations and compliance standards. Full UK driving licence (essential). Strong problem-solving ability, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to work. Excellent communication and customer service skills.

Desirable Skills & Qualifications:



DHF or ADSA Qualifications. Electrical qualifications (e.g., BS7671 18th Edition Wiring Regulations). CSCS / IPAF / PASMA certification (preferred but not essential).
