Job Description

The post holder will be responsible for the management of a designated area, thus ensuring provision of high standards of care delivery within available resources. The post holder will provide line management, guidance, support and leadership to all staff within the Theatre Department.



Primary responsibilities includes:



To provide safe environment for unconscious patients emerging from anaesthesia, including airway maintenance and vital sign monitoring



Identifying and managing surgical or anaesthetic complications



Pain Administration, Fluid management, Wound care, Drug administration



To act as a team leader for Recovery team

Participate in the full range of clinical activity within the Theatre Department, including anaesthetics when qualified and demonstrate expert evidence based knowledge. In addition will act as a specialist practitioner in relation to the specialities in the theatre where designated and provide expert assistance to all members of the theatre team.



Delivers skilled practical patient care and participates in the monitoring of the assessing, planning, delivery and evaluation of individualised patient care.



. Ensures that all clinical and legal documentation completed by unit staff is legible and accurate, and that the staff understand their relevance and confidentiality.



Ensures adherence to all Trust and theatre policies including Health and Safety, Infection Control, Lifting and Handling, COSHH, Security and usage of controlled drugs.



. Take responsibility for the checking of equipment in relevant working area and take appropriate action if any adverse findings are detected.



Takes responsibility for assessing the surgical requirements, ensuring the availability of and/or ordering necessary equipment to ensure quality patient care.



Participates in the provision of a pre-assessment clinic where patients have their initial assessment for surgery. This will include the obtaining of blood for clinical investigation, the arranging of diagnostic tests and determining the suitability of patients for day surgery.



Takes responsibility for the obtaining of equipment and supplies that are not normally kept in the designated theatre area.



Initiates research-based development to improve policies and protocols.



Participate in clinical trials of new equipment and supplies and evaluation of existing equipment in collaboration with medical and technical staff.



. Alerts the Clinical Manager when factors occur which affect safe and competent practices.



In the Day Surgery Unit, participates in a patient follow up service by telephone within office hours giving support and advice to patients and their carers.



Participates in the custody, care, ordering and administration of drugs and medicines in accordance with the Trust and local policy.
