Provide expert diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy (gastroscopy, colonoscopy &/or flexible sigmoidoscopy) independently on sedated and non-sedated patients at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle and West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven
Provide expert diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy on sedated and non-sedated patients to ensure timely delivery in keeping with local and national targets in line with appropriate Trust competencies.
Provide flexible cover for endoscopy lists, working across both acute hospitals as required.
Take clinical responsibility to make decisions on endoscopic findings and histopathology results taking into consideration patient's general health, co-morbidities, wellbeing, size and position of pathology and potential outcomes. Ordering and interpreting further investigations as required, initiating appropriate treatment plans and discharge back to referring doctor / GP.
Impart clinical judgements on investigative findings, including the breaking of bad news to patients.
Communicate effectively with patients and carers to deliver complex and sensitive information with tact and empathy.
Take direct referrals from multidisciplinary team members between primary and secondary care.
Refer patients to hospital consultants and other members of the health care team as appropriate.
Support endoscopy services to maintain high standards of quality in all domains as measured by the global rating scale (GRS) for endoscopy.
Operate and ensure safe and expert use of highly complex specialised medical equipment used in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy.
Work in accordance with the NMC code of professional conduct and relevant professional guidelines.
