Job Purpose
Barnet Integrated Learning Disabilities Team aims to provide a specialist Health and Social Service for Adults with Learning Disability who live in or originate from the borough.
To provide a Speech and Language Therapy Service to adults with learning disabilities residing in Barnet.
The post holder provides highly specialist assessment, treatment and diagnosis to Adults with a Learning Disability referred to the multi-agency Adult Learning Disability Team in Barnet, acting as a specialist resource to other medical, nursing, education and therapy staff and providing second opinions in this specialist clinical area.
The post holder will be required to use highly developed auditory and perceptual skills in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of adults with learning disabilities who have complex communication difficulties and may also have challenging needs and/or eating and swallowing difficulties.
The post holder will lead the speech and language therapy team, being responsible for ensuring governance of the service, staff management/development and achieving service delivery in line with the service specification.
Key Responsibilities
To develop and provide a Speech and Language Therapy Service consisting of assessment, diagnosis and treatment to adults with learning disabilities who have complex communication difficulties, challenging needs and/or eating and swallowing difficulties
To reflect on auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of client's communication and to identify appropriate strategies to facilitate and enhance communicative effectiveness
To analyse and transcribe all aspects of client speech and language at the level of phonetics, phonology, syntax, morphology, semantics, prosody and pragmatics as necessary
To employ manual dexterity in the manipulation and stimulation of the orofacial process
To carry out highly specialised physical examination of the orofacial process, including deglutition (swallowing)
To simultaneously monitor auditory, visual and kinaesthetic aspects of dyadic interactions, encouraging adaptive strategies to maximise effective communication
