Barista/Kitchen Assistant (Part time 8 hours)





Title:

Barista/Kitchen Assistant

Hours:

8 hours per week across 2-3 days usually Wednesday, Thursday & occasional Saturdays - a Time off in lieu (TOIL) system is in operation but Ararat does not offer overtime payments

Salary:

12.45 per hour

Annual Leave:

20 working days Pro-rated per annum (plus statutory holidays).

Further paid annual leave days may be added between Christmas and New Year at the discretion of the Deacons.

Pension:

Optional contribution of 4% paid into a Personal Pension Scheme.

Probation period:

3 months.

Qualifications and experience





Mathematics and English at GCSE (Essential)

Food allergy training (desirable)

Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate (desirable)

Knowledge of COSHH (desirable)

Knowledge of Natasha's Law (desirable)

Past experience working in a similar role (desirable)

CORE TASKS:



The nature of the post is such that the postholder will be required to undertake a variety of duties and responsibilities at different times according to need. The postholder will be expected to be able to participate in each of the following tasks:

Preparing drinks using a commercial coffee machine to a professional standard.

Serving members of the church and from the local community.

Making everyone feel welcome by being attentive, sensitive, friendly and hospitable.

Being aware of dietary needs, allergies and intolerances and working accordingly

Handling a till and managing both cash and card payments.

Cleaning as you go.

Opening up the premises and locking up at the end of a shift (when needed)

Maintaining an inviting, hygienic, food display

Ensuring all supplies are safe to serve (attending to use by dates)

Preparing simple foods in the kitchen

Maintaining a clean, tidy and well organised kitchen

Emptying rubbish

Safe use of cooking equipment - use of hob, oven, microwave etc

Plating up food in an attractive manner

Cleaning of all surfaces

Washing up and loading the dishwasher

Governance



The postholder will be line-managed by the Ark Cafe supervisor who will be responsible for annual appraisals and handling leave requests. The Cafe is managed by the Ararat Trustees to whom all staff are responsible and accountable.

Training



Necessary training will be arranged by Ararat who will ensure that appropriate training records are kept up to date. Such training will be free of charge to the post holder.

The Workplace:



Ararat Baptist Church is a thriving church in the north-east of Cardiff. An active, community focused, and inclusive church having a seven-day ministry to both its members and the local community. In addition to the usual Sunday services, it provides a busy and popular community cafe known as the Ark Cafe and hires out rooms for various local groups in the Church centre. It seeks to be inclusive to all and is highly regarded by those who live in the local area.

The Church is managed by a team of members termed 'deacons' who function as the Charity's Trustees. Being such a busy Church, we require additional staff to assist the Trustees in the day-to-day management.

The Team



The Ark Cafe operates from 10am to 14.00 Monday to Thursdays each week and also on Saturdays from 10.00 until 12.30. It is run by a team of four part time barista/kitchen assistants and a team of regular volunteers. There is a Cafe supervisor. Ararat is a not-for-profit ministry to the community of Ararat Baptist Church, and all staff are required to operate with understanding, sympathy and in respect of the Christian faith.
