The Construction Barrister provides specialist advocacy and legal advice in contentious and non-contentious construction matter. The role exists to represent clients in court, arbitration, adjudication, and mediation, and to provide expert opinions on complex construction law issues. The Barrister works with Solicitors, developers, contractors, and consultants to resolve disputes and support clients in achieving commercially viable outcomes. Provides supervision and support to the Construction Solicitor, ensuring compliance with professional standards
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Advise on contentious and non-contentious construction law issues, including contract interpretation, payment disputes, delays, and defects.
Draft pleadings, skeleton arguments, and legal opinions for construction disputes.
Represent clients in court proceedings, arbitrations, adjudications, and mediations.
Provide strategic advice on high-value construction projects and regulatory compliance.
Conduct legal research and apply case law, statutory frameworks, and standard form contracts (JCT, NEC, FIDIC)
Liaise with Solicitors, clients, expert witnesses and industry professionals to prepare and present cases.
Uphold the BAR Standard Board (BSB) Handbook and maintain high professional and ethical standards.
Required Qualifications
Qualified Barrister with current practising certificate
Minimum 5 years post-qualification experience in construction law.
Strong knowledge of UK construction contracts (JCT, NEC, FIDC) and housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996.
Excellent advocacy, drafting, and negotiation skills.
Ability to manage complex, high-value disputes and deliver clear, practical advice.
