Beamline Scientist I12 (jeep)

United Kingdom, United Kingdom

Job Description

About Us

Diamond Light Source is the UK\xe2\x80\x99s national synchrotron and one of the most advanced scientific facilities in the world. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth, and environmental sciences.

About the role

We are now looking for a skilled and highly motivated Beamline Scientist to join beamline I12 (the Joint Engineering, Environmental and Processing Beamline - JEEP) at Diamond, an experimental facility that provides intense radiation in the high-energy X-ray spectrum.

I12 is a multi-technique beamline for diffraction and imaging of engineering components, materials, and processes, under real conditions. The beam characteristics permit the in-situ study of materials and processes inside environmental chambers, and the photon beam energy enables good penetration through large or dense samples, combined with a large beam size. X-ray techniques available are radiography, tomography, energy-dispersive diffraction, monochromatic and white beam 2D diffraction/scattering.

I12 has established a broad user community in Materials Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Biomedical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Geoscience, Biology, Cultural Heritage, and Physics.

The Beamline Scientist will contribute to the technical development of the beamline, assist in the installation and commissioning of beamline components, provide user support, and carry out research in areas relevant to the beamline.

Further responsibilities will include:

  • Provide beamline operational support including responsibility for the day-to-day safe operation of the beamline.
  • Act as the local contact for selected user experiments.
  • Collaborate on beamline upgrades and development projects.
  • Carry out own research in an area relevant to the beamline, disseminate the results and become recognised in this field of expertise.
  • Manage the development, procurement, testing, installation, and maintenance of bespoke scientific equipment and software to perform novel experiments.
  • Engage actively with the new and existing I12 user communities.
About you

You should have a PhD degree in Materials Science, Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, or a related field with proven experience of in-situ experiments using X-rays or neutrons.

We are particularly keen to grow the use of diffraction and diffraction imaging and would welcome candidates with a good knowledge of X-ray (or neutron) diffraction (or scattering) and experience with data analysis.

A demonstrated independent research program, knowledge of X-ray or neutron instrumentation, and prior experience of supporting research at a facility are desirable.

You will demonstrate good interpersonal, communication and presentational skills, and the ability to interact effectively with staff and facility users at all levels.

Benefits

Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 26 days annual leave plus 13 days of statutory and company holidays and 2 annual volunteering days, along with flexible working hours and an excellent pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.

To Apply

Please use the online application process to apply and tell us why you believe you are suitable for this role.

The closing date for applications is 17th of September 2023, however, we encourage early applications as some candidates may be interviewed before this date.
