Job Description

Solid State Security Ltd is one of the UK's leading specialist electrical contracting companies with over 35 year's experience in the design, supply, installation, commissioning and maintenance of life-safety systems including fire alarms, security systems, emergency lighting, CCTV, voice alarm systems and call systems.



We are expanding further and are looking for a Bid Estimator to join our growing team. The successful applicant is to calculate the anticipated time, cost, materials, and labour required for proposals so we can submit a competitive and profitable bid to win within the public sector. The estimator will play a vital role in determining the financial viability of a proposal and future development of commercial intelligence.

A competitive bonus is payable for successful tender bids

Experience within frameworks, public sector tenders and the Fire & Security industry or construction Industry is desirable but not essential.

Work placements will be considered with a view of full-time employment dependant on performance during the placement period.

Key Responsibilities:



Analysing Tender Documents

: Reviewing drawings, specifications, and other documentation provided by the client to fully understand the clients scope and requirements.

Cost Estimation

: Calculating the total cost of the proposal, including materials, equipment, transportation, labour, and subcontractor fees.

Gathering Quotes

: Soliciting and negotiating prices from suppliers and subcontractors to ensure the most competitive rates are secured.

Risk Assessment

: Identifying potential technical, financial, and operational risks associated with the proposal and incorporating appropriate contingencies into the estimate.

Preparing the Bid

: Compiling a detailed, well-organized, and high-quality cost summary for internal review (adjudication) and final submission to the client.

Collaboration

: Working closely with bid managers/writer, project managers, engineers, and design teams to ensure all aspects of the bid are accurate and aligned with the company's strategy.

Site Visits

: Visiting proposed sites to gather firsthand information on conditions, access, and potential challenges.

Market Awareness

: Staying informed about market trends, inflation, exchange rates, and new technologies to ensure estimates are current.

Product indexing:

optimising and collating product information through supplier partnerships.

Essential Skills:



Strong Numeracy and Analytical Skills

: The ability to work with complex financial data and perform accurate calculations is fundamental.

Attention to Detail

: Meticulous accuracy is essential to prevent costly errors in the bid submission.

IT Proficiency

: Competency in estimating software and spreadsheet programs like Microsoft Excel is required for data analysis and take-off measurements.

Communication Skills

: Excellent written and verbal communication skills for preparing costs, presenting estimates to management, and negotiating with suppliers.

Time Management

: The ability to manage multiple tenders simultaneously and work to strict deadlines under pressure is critical.

Commercial Awareness

: A good understanding of profit margins, market dynamics, and business development strategies.
