Purpose of the Role:
To deliver high-quality A-Level teaching in Biology, fostering academic excellence, scientific curiosity, and preparing students for further education and careers in science and related fields.
Key Responsibilities:
Teaching & Learning
Plan and deliver engaging and challenging lessons in A-Level Biology, following the curriculum and exam board requirements.
Differentiate lessons to meet the needs of students with varying abilities and backgrounds.
Use a range of teaching methods, resources, and technology to enhance learning.
Set, mark, and assess work in line with college and exam board standards, providing constructive feedback.
Student Support & Progress
Monitor and track student progress, maintaining accurate records of attainment and attendance.
Provide academic guidance, support, and intervention strategies where required.
Prepare students effectively for internal assessments and external A-Level examinations.
Support students with university applications, personal statements, and career aspirations related to Biology and STEM fields.
Professional Responsibilities
Contribute to departmental meetings, planning, and curriculum development.
Participate in CPD and training opportunities to enhance teaching practice.
Maintain high standards of classroom management, safeguarding, and student welfare.
Communicate effectively with parents/guardians, colleagues, and external stakeholders.
Contribute to the enrichment programme, trips, or activities that support science learning.
Person Specification - A-Level Biology Teacher
Qualifications & Training
Degree in Biology or a related discipline - essential.
Recognised teaching qualification (PGCE, QTS, or equivalent) - essential.
Evidence of continued professional development - desirable.
Safeguarding and child protection training (or willingness to undertake) - essential.
Experience
Experience of teaching Biology at A-Level or equivalent post-16 setting - essential.
Experience in preparing students for external exams - essential.
Experience of contributing to curriculum development - desirable.
Experience in pastoral support of post-16 students - desirable.
Knowledge & Skills
Strong subject knowledge in Biology and related sciences.
Understanding of A-Level exam specifications and assessment methods.
Ability to inspire, motivate, and challenge students.
Effective classroom management skills.
Proficiency in using ICT to support teaching and learning.
Awareness of safeguarding, equality, and diversity in education.
