We are looking for a HCPC-registered Biomedical Scientist with experience in Haematology and/or Blood Transfusion. You should demonstrate a strong commitment to quality, safety, and continuous improvement, as well as a genuine passion for providing excellent patient care

The ideal candidate will:

Have relevant laboratory experience and be familiar with current analytical techniques and instrumentation.

Be capable of working both independently and as part of a team within a busy, high-throughput environment.

Demonstrate excellent communication and problem-solving skills.

Have a proactive approach to learning, development, and innovation in biomedical science.

If you are a motivated Biomedical Scientist seeking to advance your career in a dynamic, progressive, and supportive NHS environment, this role offers an exceptional opportunity to do so.

As a Biomedical Scientist, you will work as part of a skilled and motivated team within the Haematology and Blood Transfusion department, contributing to the provision of a high-quality, patient- focused diagnostic service. You will rotate through all key areas of the laboratory, including General Haematology, Coagulation, and Blood Transfusion, gaining experience across the full range of tests and analytical platforms used in modern laboratory medicine. Your core responsibilities will include the preparation, analysis, and validation of patient samples using advanced automated equipment such as the Abbott Alinity H analyser, Werfen ACL TOP systems, and IBG Iris Blood Group Analyser. You will ensure all work is completed in accordance with established standard operating procedures (SOPs), quality standards, and UKAS ISO 15189 requirements, maintaining accuracy, reliability, and traceability in all testing processes. Perform analytical procedures in Haematology, Coagulation, and Blood Transfusion in line with departmental SOPs, ensuring all results are accurate, timely, and clinically relevant. Conduct appropriate validation and authorisation of results referring abnormal or critical findings to senior staff or clinical teams as required. Undertake daily maintenance, calibration, and quality control of laboratory equipment and analysers, promptly reporting and troubleshooting faults or performance issues. Participate in both Internal Quality Control (IQC) and External Quality Assurance (EQA) schemes to ensure the reliability and consistency of test results. Assist in the introduction, evaluation, and verification of new equipment, reagents, and analytical methods, contributing to ongoing service development and improvement. Support and adhere to laboratory Health & Safety policies, including risk assessments, COSHH regulations, and infection prevention and control measures. Maintain comprehensive and accurate laboratory documentation, ensuring all records are kept in accordance with regulatory and audit requirements. Work collaboratively with biomedical scientists, support staff, and clinical colleagues to deliver an efficient and high-quality service that meets the needs of patients and clinicians. Communicate effectively and professionally with colleagues, clinicians, and service users, providing clear and concise information on test procedures and results where appropriate. Participate actively in training and supervision of less experienced staff, students, and trainees, promoting best laboratory practices and supporting professional development within the team. Take part in clinical audits, service evaluations, and laboratory accreditation processes, helping to identify and implement improvements in efficiency and quality. Maintain and demonstrate ongoing Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to ensure your practice remains current, evidence-based, and in line with HCPC and IBMS standards. Contribute to the laboratory's Quality Management System (QMS) by assisting with document control, non-conformance reporting, and corrective action implementation. Uphold the principles of equality, diversity, and inclusion within the workplace and support a culture of respect, teamwork, and professionalism. You will be required to work flexibly as part of the department's 24- hour diagnostic service, which includes participation in rotas covering nights, weekends, and bank holidays. This ensures the continuity of essential testing and the timely provision of results to clinical teams across the Trust.

As the laboratory continues to modernise and undergo technology upgrades and analyser replacements, you will be encouraged to take an active role in method evaluations, workflow redesign, and digitalisation projects. You will contribute your technical expertise and feedback to ensure new systems are implemented effectively and that changes lead to measurable improvements in service quality and efficiency.

Your involvement in quality improvement initiatives, such as Lean working practices or automation optimisation, will help the department remain at the forefront of the NHS's Modernising Pathology agenda.
