SPS is offering an exciting opportunity for a motivated HCPC-Registered Biomedical Scientist Team Manager in Histopathology. This is a full-time, 12-month fixed-term post working Monday to Friday across our ESL Pathology Laboratories at Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District Hospital. We are looking for a dynamic leader who is passionate about driving quality and supporting service development within the Histopathology department.

SYNLAB UK & Ireland have established experience of working in partnership with the NHS to deliver and improve pathology services through its existing pathology joint ventures - including Southwest Pathology Services (SPS).

Our team at SPS have been fundamental to the principle of making a positive difference to healthcare in Somerset for over a decade. We hold ISO15189 UKAS accreditation and are an HCPC approved training Laboratory for both IBMS Registration and Specialist Portfolios.

The Band 7 Histopathology Team Manager will provide strong leadership and direct support in delivering the scope and objectives of the laboratory transformation programme. They will play a key role in developing policies and planning the implementation of change to ensure efficient and effective service improvements. The postholder will manage and maintain laboratory informatics systems, including system interfacing and connectivity with the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS). As part of the senior leadership structure, they will participate in the Senior Manager On-Call roster, providing expert guidance and operational support when required. The role also involves contributing to core departmental functions such as Health & Safety, audit processes, and staff training. In addition, the Team Manager will participate in the advanced dissection of histological specimens (Categories A-C) and provide clinical input to support accurate case referral and high-quality diagnostic services.

Duties:



Define project scope, objectives, deliverables, and success criteria of laboratory transformation (e.g., implementation of a new equipment, LIMS connectivity, and service redesign). To organise and manage a team of Biomedical Scientists, Junior staff and Support staff performing Biomedical analyses and processes. To ensure a high quality of analysis agreed quality standards of service delivery and key performance indicators. To provide an expert level of theoretical and practical knowledge to the laboratory service. To be responsible for and ensure that specialist training is delivered to Biomedical Scientists, Healthcare Support Workers and other Healthcare Professionals and to provide expert technical advice in areas of responsibility to all Healthcare Professionals. Ensure that all areas of responsibility comply with all relevant current and future legislation and complies with the requirements of Clinical Pathology Accreditation (CPA) and the recommendations from the Royal College of Pathologists and similar professional organisations. To provide professional leadership to Specialist Biomedical Scientists, Trainees BMS and Pathology Support staffs. To undertake research, conduct audits, produce reports and present findings to Healthcare professionals as required. To continue with personal development through Academic or practical experience. Identify risks and constraints affecting project delivery, and develop and monitor risk registers and mitigation plans. Maintain the standards of conduct required by the Health Professions Council as a registered Biomedical Scientist. Liaise with clinicians, pathology networks, suppliers, IT and external partners. Support procurement, implementation and validation of new equipment, and monitor performance and KPI improvements. Coordinate validation, verification and training for new laboratory equipment. Provide input for genetic referral and send away cases. Provide expert technical advice to clinicians as to the appropriateness of tests, timescales and scientific guidance as required. To both Hub and Essential service laboratory teams. Have expert analytical and technical knowledge to perform and manage specialist analytical procedures.

Qualifications:



HPC State Registration as a Biomedical Scientist, with evidence of Continued Professional Development MSc/FIBMS by examination, and is currently in possession of Fellowship of the IBMS Management Qualification to ILM level 3 or relevant experience. IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma if applicable or an additional Masters level qualification IBMS DEP in dissection practice desirable
