4 shifts per week, 10:00-19:00 with a 20 minute unpaid lunch break

Basic Purpose of Job:

To oversee daily meal production for and with residents and staff in Birchwood@kaleidoscope House. The role requires high level contact with residents of the service and volunteers.

Background and service:

Birchwood@Kaleidoscope House is a drug and alcohol residential detoxifation/rehabilitation service in the Wirral. We are registered with CQC and have up to 25 residents at any one time. As a residential service we are open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Our kitchen is a well loved element of an individual's stay and adds immeasurably to the quality of the detoxification process. Many of the Individuals who enter Birchwood@Kaleidoscope house do so in a malnourished state. For individuals who stay with us for rehabilitation catering for their fellow residents is a welcome meaningful activity.

Birchwood@Kaleidoscope House is the only non residential service Kaleidoscope offers and our head office is in Wales where we deliver a wide range of community drug and alcohol services.

MAIN DUTIES:

A. Operational

1. Plan in full consultation with residents and clinical staff a healthy and nutritious menu taking into special dietary considerations

2. Ensure stocks of food are available and replenished through effective ordering, stock control and purchasing

3. Ensure resident and staff allergies are noted and food is prepared accordingly

4. Prepare and cook meals including cook to chill jointly with residents and volunteers

5. Consider the needs of your catering colleagues and where you can provide advance preparation of food and food orders

6. Ensure that your kitchen, storage and dining areas meet environmental health, internal and industry standards

7. Contribute to and complete (as required) audits of your responsible areas in order to improve and maintain our standards

8. Ensure all foods are stored correctly and safely

9. Ensure that food waste is kept to a minimum for budgetary and environmental reasons

10. Ensure the safety of the kitchen, dining areas and catering equipment at all times and report any repairs immediately to the manager on duty and if necessary remove equipment from use with clear labels

11. Contribute to a life skills training programme for residents which focusses on meal planning, preparation and budgeting

12. Contribute to ensuring an Birchwood@Kaleidoscope House is an environment that offers respect and dignity to each resident

13. To monitor and record food safety and due diligence records accurately and timely, to ensure food safe practices are maintained

14. To ensure all food preparation, service, dining areas and ancillary areas are kept hygienically clean; contributing to the maintenance and overall cleanliness of the environment through basic cleaning tasks

B. Organisation

15. To adhere to the policies and procedures of Birchwood@Kaleidoscope House, in particular Health and Safety, Food Hygiene Regulations, COSHH and Equal Opportunities policies

16. To bring to the attention of your Line Manager areas of specific concern about any aspect of the service, including concerns about colleague conduct or standards

17. To assist your Line Manager in developing and maintaining good working relationships internally and externally

18. In all circumstances promote the best interests of Birchwood@Kaleidoscope House and support the overall promotion of the service

19. To complete required training courses

20. To perform any other duties as deemed appropriate by management

21. Ensure that all property to belonging to Birchwood@Kaleidoscope House is properly utilised and cared for

NVQ Level 1 Food Hygiene is essential.

It is essential that the post-holder establishes and maintains good working relationships with clients, customers, staff and undertakes working in a friendly, courteous, professional and approachable manner. Failure in this area is likely to cause the post-holder to be inappropriate for the work involved.

Although all staff are appointed to work in specific areas of Kaleidoscope it must be understood that all appointments are made to Kaleidoscope as a whole. In time of need, management are able to mobilize the staffing resource of Kaleidoscope to meet these needs.
