Bookkeeper/accounts Assistant

Glasgow, SCT, GB, United Kingdom

Job Description

About Blyth Accountants

Blyth Accountants is a growing independent practice in Glasgow, supporting a diverse portfolio of small and medium-sized businesses with bookkeeping, accounts, tax compliance and advisory services. The practice is currently operated by a sole proprietor, with ambitious plans for expansion and the creation of a collaborative team environment where staff can develop their skills and progress professionally.

Although we are a small practice, we offer significant advantages for the right person: meaningful responsibility, varied client exposure, flexibility and the opportunity to play a key role in shaping the direction of a modern, forward-thinking firm. As we expand, this position has the scope to progress into a more senior role with opportunities to support and mentor future junior staff.

The Role

We are seeking an experienced Bookkeeper / Accounts Assistant with a background in accountancy practice work. The role will commence on the 2nd of February 2026. You must be based in Glasgow or surrounding areas. The position will begin remotely and transition to a hybrid arrangement once office premises have been secured.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will undertake a wide range of practice-based duties, including:

Bookkeeping using Xero, FreeAgent, Sage and other relevant platforms. Preparing and filing VAT returns. Processing and filing confirmation statements. Managing payroll and CIS processing, submissions and reporting. Reconciling bank accounts, purchase ledgers, sales ledgers and client records. Preparing management accounts. Assisting with year-end accounts for limited companies, sole traders and partnerships. Liaising with HMRC regarding client tax affairs, payroll and CIS matters. Communicating directly with clients to gather information, resolve queries and provide updates. Maintaining accurate digital records and ensuring a robust audit trail. Supporting the general running of the practice through light administrative duties. Longer term: assisting in the training and supervision of junior staff as the practice grows.

About You

To be considered for this position, you must bring:

Proven experience working in an accountancy practice. Strong and demonstrable experience in CIS processing, submissions and compliance. Solid bookkeeping skills across multiple platforms, including Xero and Dext. Confident understanding of VAT rules and reporting requirements. Experience in payroll processing and HMRC correspondence. Excellent communication skills and a professional client-facing manner. High levels of accuracy, organisation and initiative. The ability to work independently within a supportive environment. A proactive and positive approach, with an interest in contributing to the growth of the practice. Commitment to full-time hours and attendance in the Glasgow office three days per week once established.

What We Offer

Salary up to 28,000 for the right candidate. A friendly, supportive working environment with direct involvement in the practice's development. Hybrid working arrangement once office space is secured. Genuine progression opportunities as the team expands. Broad exposure to varied clients and tasks, offering strong professional development. A role where your input and ideas will genuinely influence systems, processes and growth.

Please submit your CV together with a short covering statement outlining your practice experience, CIS knowledge and why you feel this position is suited to you.
