The Role
This position combines
bookkeeping/accountancy duties
with
general office and administrative support
.
This role is suited to someone who enjoys a hands-on position in a small business and is happy to get involved in all aspects of office life.
You will be working closely with the Director in a small office (no large team to manage), and the role requires someone who is organised, proactive, and comfortable working independently.
Key ResponsibilitiesAccounts & Finance
Day-to-day bookkeeping (sales ledger, purchase ledger, bank reconciliations)
Preparing and issuing customer invoices
Credit control and chasing outstanding payments
Processing supplier invoices and payments
Preparing VAT returns
Supporting payroll preparation (timesheets, hours, deductions)
Liaising with external accountants for year-end information
Office & Administration
Day-to-day running of the office
Handling calls, emails, and customer or supplier queries
Maintaining job records, filing systems, and compliance documentation
Ordering office supplies, parts, and consumables
Supporting general admin tasks as required
Assisting with driver-related admin and operational paperwork
Director Support
Providing direct administrative support to the Director
Helping organise workloads, schedules, and information
Taking initiative to improve systems and processes
Being a trusted, reliable point of support within the business
Skills & Experience RequiredEssential
Proven experience in
bookkeeping / accounts
Confident using accounting software (Sage preferred)
Strong attention to detail and accuracy
Well organised and able to manage multiple tasks
Comfortable working independently in a small business
Good communication skills and a practical, can-do attitude
Competent with Excel, Word, and email
Desirable
Experience in construction, waste, transport, plant hire, or similar industries
Experience supporting a business owner or director
Experience working in a small or family-run business
