Brent council are looking for an Occupational Therapist to join our supportive Adult Social Care Occupational Therapy Team
You will play a key role in promoting independence, wellbeing, and inclusion for adults and their carers, helping people live as independently as possible within their own homes and communities..
Role Purpose
Promote strength-based practice and positive change in people's lives using occupational therapy (OT) methods, models, and tools.
Support people to be as independent as possible and promote health and wellbeing.
Carry out needs-led assessments within the guidelines of the Care Act for residents and their carers.
Provide OT services to physically disabled people and those with complex or multiple disabilities, including mental health conditions, as a key member of the multi-disciplinary team.
Make professional judgements within the context of relevant legal and policy frameworks.
Work with people to assess their needs and plan interventions using all available resources to promote independence.
Prevent or delay the development of care and support needs, and reduce existing needs where possible.
Promote the use of specialist OT knowledge in cost-effective assessment, intervention, and support for long-term care needs.
Consider and, where eligible, address the needs of carers.
Principal Accountabilities and Responsibilities (PO1 Level)
Complete person-centred occupational therapy functional assessments of adults living in the community, identifying physical, sensory, psychological, and cognitive needs related to Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) within their environment and support systems.
Develop short treatment plans in collaboration with clients, families, and carers to address identified needs.
Recognise and raise safeguarding concerns relating to adults with care and support needs.
With support, undertake and lead safeguarding enquiries under Section 42 duties, promoting the principles of Making Safeguarding Personal.
Apply the Mental Capacity Act where required, supporting actions in the best interest of clients.
Hold a protected caseload that increases through progression of the OT preceptorship/development programme.
Undertake a 12-month preceptorship/development programme for newly qualified OTs.
Complete OT assessments in a timely manner and provide copies to service users.
Refer clients to other health and social care teams as part of a holistic OT assessment and intervention plan.
Provide standard equipment to meet client and carer needs, demonstrating safe use of equipment, adaptations, and alternative methods to support independence.
With support, provide moving and handling equipment and create written care plans for clients and carers.
With support, assess and make recommendations to housing departments for Disabled Facilities Grants, housing adaptations, and housing needs reports.
Identify and request minor adaptations, including positioning diagrams, and complete joint visits with housing colleagues as required.
Arrange and participate in meetings and joint visits with other health, social care, and voluntary sector professionals.
Review the appropriateness and safety of all OT interventions, including equipment trialled or provided, in consultation with clients, carers, and other professionals.
Ensure clients and carers receive necessary advice, support, and guidance, including access to translation, interpretation, or advocacy services.
Participate in learning events for the team, colleagues, and external agencies.
Contribute to project work and group work to support learning.
Make constructive use of regular supervision, participate in staff appraisal, identify personal training needs, and attend relevant training courses.
You will have:
A Degree or Diploma in Occupational Therapy.
HCPC registration
Experience (through placements or employment) supporting adults with physical, cognitive, or mental health needs.
Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
A commitment to developing your professional practice and delivering person-centred, strength-based interventions.
