British Sign Language (BSL) Support Worker - Residential Home in Birmingham
Job Purpose:
To provide tailored support to Deaf or hard-of-hearing residents within a residential care setting, ensuring their communication needs are met through British Sign Language (BSL). The role promotes independence, dignity, and quality of life for residents, enabling them to engage fully in daily living activities, social interaction, and personal development.
Key Responsibilities:
Communicate effectively with Deaf or hard-of-hearing residents using BSL.
Support residents with daily personal care, routines, and activities.
Assist in promoting residents' independence and participation in the home and community.
Translate spoken information into BSL during meetings, medical appointments, or recreational activities.
Advocate for residents' needs and preferences, ensuring their voice is heard.
Support residents to build and maintain relationships with staff, family, and peers.
Maintain accurate records and contribute to care plans, reviews, and safeguarding measures.
Work collaboratively with colleagues, external professionals, and families.
Promote awareness and understanding of Deaf culture within the home.
Requirements:Essential:
Minimum Level 2 or 3 in British Sign Language
(Level 6 desirable).
Experience working in a care, support, or residential environment.
Understanding of Deaf culture and the needs of Deaf or hard-of-hearing individuals.
Compassionate, patient, and respectful approach to care.
Ability to work shifts, including evenings and weekends.
Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills.
Desirable:
NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health & Social Care (or equivalent).
Experience supporting individuals with additional needs, such as learning disabilities, autism, or mental health conditions.
Valid UK driving licence (if travel or outings are part of the role).
