An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Building Services Engineer to join our Estates Department, providing high-quality mechanical building services support across LSTM's estate. This will include design, planned maintenance, servicing, alteration, refurbishment, and new build works - primarily in a laboratory and research environment, but also covering offices and teaching spaces.
You will work closely with colleagues across Estates and our research groups to ensure the smooth operational delivery of building services installations, critical laboratory equipment maintenance, engineering, and associated infrastructure. This role will also contribute to LSTM's Sustainability Strategy, supporting carbon reduction initiatives and embedding best practice in energy conservation.
Key Responsibilities are (but not limited to):
Manage and maintain specialist laboratory and research facility mechanical and electrical systems, including HVAC, fume cupboards, autoclaves, safety cabinets, and -80C freezers
Oversee safe systems of work for in-house teams and contractors, ensuring compliance with statutory and HSE requirements
Deliver planned and reactive maintenance programmes within agreed budgets, maintaining asset registers and records
Manage small-scale projects, refurbishments, and improvements from inception to completion, including design, procurement, and commissioning
Support compliance with all relevant regulations and codes of practice, particularly within specialist laboratory environments
Promote energy efficiency and sustainability initiatives, contributing to LSTM's Net Zero targets
Supervise and monitor contractors, ensuring work meets required standards, timelines, and cost parameters
Lead the development and implementation of Building Management Systems (BMS) across LSTM
Undertake regular site inspections, risk assessments, and produce SOPs to support safe, efficient building services operations
You will possess:
A BTEC HNC/HND or equivalent industry trade qualification in Mechanical Services, Engineering, or Building Services with significant post-qualification experience
Proven experience managing building services projects from inception to completion, ideally in specialist laboratory/research environments
In-depth knowledge of statutory regulations for mechanical plant and equipment, laboratory installations, and health & safety compliance (including Legionella, COSHH, and CDM regulations)
Strong problem-solving, organisational, and communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with a range of stakeholders
Proficiency in Building Management Systems (TREND) and modern energy conservation practices in HVAC, ventilation, and energy management
